Shannon Taylor, the Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney and Democratic nominee in Virginia’s 1st Congressional District, is facing new criticism from Republicans over past public comments about federal immigration enforcement, as she campaigns to unseat incumbent Rep. Rob Wittman in November.
In April 2025, Taylor described an incident in which men she believed to be immigration agents entered the Albemarle County Courthouse and detained a man whose case had just been dismissed. In remarks captured on video, Taylor said: “It was just 24 hours ago that we saw two, one masked gentleman and another gentle — I shouldn’t use the term gentleman, but two men who came into the Albemarle Court House without any identification… literally coming in and going hands on a young man who had just had his case dismissed.”
A month earlier, in March 2025, Taylor warned voters about the stakes of Virginia’s attorney general race in comments referencing Border Patrol and public schools: “It’s the attorney general… that’s going to make the difference… whether that you all have children or grandchildren in public schools and they are in their classes learning, whether or not border patrol agents will be running down the hallway while they’re trying to learn or not.”
Taylor has also campaigned alongside Bobby Pulido, a Democratic congressional candidate in Texas who has described Border Patrol agents as “White Nationalists” and argued that border security enforcement is motivated by racism. Pulido has been reported to have a longstanding relationship with Julión Álvarez, a figure the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned in 2017 for laundering money for drug traffickers.
Republicans have paired these comments with recent violent crime cases in the region to argue that Virginia Democrats’ approach to immigration enforcement endangers public safety. Last week, police in Fairfax County arrested Alexis Antonio Cedillos-Campos, a Salvadoran national who crossed the border illegally in April 2024, in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 42-year-old woman near a park. In a separate case the same week, Abdulloi Toshpulodzoda — who had admitted to fatally stabbing his roommate — obtained a foreign passport, received a 48-hour pass from a state mental hospital, stayed in a taxpayer-funded apartment, and purchased a one-way ticket to his home country of Tajikistan.
Neither case has been directly tied to Taylor’s record as Henrico’s top prosecutor, but Republicans have cited them as evidence of a broader pattern they attribute to Democratic policy on immigration and criminal justice in Virginia.
Taylor’s critics have also pointed to her 2021 signature on a letter stating that “tough on crime policies” have been an “anathema to justice,” as well as her decision on her first day in office to dismiss a number of prosecutors, which critics have characterized as based on race.
“Shannon Taylor’s brain must have been broken by the woke mind virus because no one in Virginia wants criminal illegal aliens and violent repeat offenders given lax deals and released back onto the streets. Extreme Democrats have turned Virginia into a pro-criminal violent hellscape, and nut jobs like Taylor are to blame,” said RNC Spokeswoman Emma Hall.
Taylor is challenging Republican Rep. Rob Wittman for Virginia’s 1st Congressional District seat in the November election.
