“The Love Hypothesis,” the film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling 2021 novel, premieres today, Sept. 23, on Prime Video at 3 a.m. ET.

The movie stars Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith, a PhD student, and Tom Bateman as Adam Carlsen, her department’s most intimidating professor. The story begins when Olive impulsively kisses Carlsen to convince her best friend that she’s over a former crush and that her love life is fine. That act spirals into a fake relationship built on rules and boundaries, which is complicated when the line between real and pretend starts to blur.

The novel it’s based on has a notable origin: it reportedly began as Star Wars fanfiction before Hazelwood turned it into an original romance novel that became a favorite among BookTok readers.
