Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico is facing renewed scrutiny in Texas after a video of him visiting a Cracker Barrel restaurant, apparently meant to project a down-home, everyman image, drew widespread mockery on social media.
The video, set to an Alan Jackson song, showed Talarico walking into the restaurant, interacting with patrons and playing the peg solitaire game found on tables there. Critics online called the effort staged and out of touch, with some questioning whether Talarico had ever visited a Cracker Barrel before. RedState columnist Buzz Patterson responded to the video on X with a blunt assessment: “What a goober.”
The Cracker Barrel visit comes as Talarico is trying to soften his public image following a CNN report that resurfaced 2020 comments in which he spoke favorably about dismantling capitalism and criticized the oil and gas industry. Since then, Talarico has described himself as a “proud capitalist,” a shift that has drawn skepticism from critics who note the reversal came just six years after his earlier remarks.
Texas remains a major battleground in the fight for control of the U.S. Senate, and Talarico’s positions on energy and economic policy are likely to face continued scrutiny given the state’s deep ties to the oil and gas industry. His attempts to reshape his public image, including the Cracker Barrel appearance, have so far generated more ridicule than the folksy appeal apparently intended.
