Selena Gomez says her nicotine vaping habit has permanently changed her voice, even though she has since quit.

The 34-year-old actress and singer shared the news in a video posted to her Instagram Story. “I’m not going to be able to change my voice,” she said. “I vaped nicotine, a lot.”

Gomez, star of “Only Murders in the Building,” said she wanted to warn fans, especially anyone considering trying vaping for the first time, about how difficult the habit is to quit.

“Everyone knows – that’s somewhat vaped – nicotine is so hard to quit,” she said. “And I think I just wanted to say, if you’re going through it, or if you are even trying to vape, it’s just not worth it.”

She acknowledged the change is likely permanent. “And it’s changed my voice,” Gomez added. “So, if you guys don’t like listening to my voice that’s totally understandable I don’t mind, just don’t listen to it. Just don’t listen.”

Despite the lasting effect, Gomez said she is focused on having broken free of the habit and encouraged others trying to do the same.

“But I am really excited because I stopped, and I just hope we can keep it up. It’s really hard, but I know if you are going through something you can get through it too. It sucks.”

Gomez has long been open about health struggles. In 2014 she entered a mental health facility shortly after being diagnosed with lupus, and she later disclosed a bipolar disorder diagnosis. In a 2021 interview with Elle, she reflected on the cumulative toll of her health issues.

“My lupus, my kidney transplant, chemotherapy, having a mental illness, going through very public heartbreaks – these were all things that honestly should have taken me down,” she said. “Every time I went through something, I was like, ‘What else? What else am I going to have to deal with?'”

In 2022 Gomez released the documentary “My Mind & Me,” covering six years of her life, career and mental health struggles. In 2020 she launched the cosmetics brand Rare Beauty, which includes the Rare Impact Fund, a program that raises money for mental health services.
