The media has seized on complaints from some crew members aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and turned them into a sweeping narrative, prompting a retired four-star general and family members to push back and defend the ship’s sailors and Marines against what they call misrepresentation.
The legacy press tends to pounce on stories that can be framed against political leaders, and the Lincoln coverage has followed that pattern with sensational headlines declaring the carrier a nightmare at sea. Hundreds of headlines and breathless takes ignore the broader context of an extended deployment and the realities of life aboard a carrier that hosts roughly 5,000 crew members. Framing normal strain and occasional complaints as a catastrophe does a disservice to the service members who volunteered for this duty.
The ship has been at sea for an extended period with relatively few port calls, and it is honest to acknowledge the difficulties that brings for sailors, Marines, and their families. U.S. Central Command’s Adm. Brad Cooper, after visiting the carrier, described camaraderie, teamwork and resilience and stressed that long deployments are uniquely challenging. That admission shows leaders are aware of the stresses while still recognizing the professionalism and sacrifice displayed on board.
“This doesn’t mean that all is perfect,” said Cooper. “Find any of the nearly 4 million Navy veterans in America today and they will likely tell you that service at sea for long periods isn’t for everyone. It is uniquely challenging and tough, and every single one of us, including me, reacts to stressors in different ways.”
Some sailors have complained, as anyone might when confined to a floating city with intense schedules and hard work. Families waiting at home feel the strain, too, and FaceTime is not the same as a hug on arrival. But acknowledging hardship is different from turning that hardship into a headline meant to score political points.
Retired Gen. Jack Keane called out what he sees as exaggerated media portrayals, saying the story misrepresents facts and insults the troops. He stressed the pride and purpose sailors feel when serving on a mission, and he noted that families sacrifice alongside them. Keane’s defense reflects a view that public discourse should honor service, not exploit it for partisan benefit.
Gen. Jack Keane (ret.) on the USS Lincoln: “I’ve never seen such misrepresentation in the media of the actual facts that took place… It’s insulting to these troops. They’ve been there for a long time, standing tall, representing the United States — and that’s what they volunteered to do, and when they’re doing something like that, they really feel good about the meaning and the purpose of what it’s about. And their families are sacrificing, as well. We should be very proud of them, wrapping our arms around them figuratively in terms of what they’ve accomplished.”
Social media amplified different voices, including family members who described morale and resolve aboard the carrier as strong, despite long shifts and demanding tasks. One father detailed his son’s role on the flight deck, underscoring the physical risk and commitment involved and insisting his son is not suffering. Those firsthand perspectives complicate the simpler, angrier narratives that dominated some outlets.

As a father, I cannot express how proud I am of my son. As an American I am proud of the crew of the ABE who have broken records for time at sea not seen since WWII. War is terrible. And this crew has certainly had hardships and made sacrifices, but it dishonors their service to cast them as victims. They are sailors, warriors, and Americans committed to one another and willing to fight until the job is done.
You can disagree with the policy decision to put them there (that is one of rights they have committed to protecting with their lives if necessary). You can also acknowledge hardships without belittling the sailors or turning their service into a pitiful narrative to bolster personal agendas.”
There is a clear difference between reporting on real challenges and weaponizing those challenges into a constant drumbeat that treats troops as props in a political fight. Honest coverage would include context about mission requirements, leadership assessments, and the support services available to those who need help. It would also stop reducing a complex story to a handful of dramatic text messages and viral clips.
Defending the military means calling out unfair portrayals while still recognizing that service members sometimes need support, whether medical, psychological, or logistical. Celebrating courage does not require ignoring hardship, but it does demand resisting narratives that flatten service into either saintliness or victimhood for partisan advantage. The crew of the Lincoln and their families deserve respect and accurate reporting that reflects the full picture.
