Checklist: Summarize the phone calls and positions; explain the federal response and leadership change; report Mayor Frey’s public statements; detail Tom Homan’s role and chain of command; note tensions over immigration enforcement and local cooperation.

President Donald Trump announced a productive phone call with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and highlighted ongoing coordination after a deadly weekend protest where Alex Pretti was shot. Trump said the conversation was “very good” and that Border Czar Tom Homan would meet with city officials to continue discussions, signaling a more hands-on federal approach. The administration framed the effort as focused on identifying criminals in custody and restoring order in the city. This move follows mounting frustration among federal agents involved in the operation.

The president also described an earlier call with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, saying they were on a similar wavelength and planning further talks. Trump emphasized that Homan would be reporting directly to him as he takes charge of the Minnesota operation. That direct reporting line places the federal effort under a figure trusted by the administration to prioritize enforcement and accountability. The change reflects a desire to cut through what officials say has been confusing messaging from other agencies.

Mayor Frey issued a public account of his exchange with the president, stressing Minneapolis’ reliance on immigrant communities and demanding an end to Operation Metro Surge. Frey said some federal agents would begin leaving the area the following day and pledged continued cooperation on “real criminal investigations.” He made clear the city will not aid in what he called unconstitutional arrests or enforce federal immigration law, a stance that clashes with the administration’s stated goals. His statements underline the local-versus-federal tension at the heart of the dispute.

I just had a very good telephone conversation with Mayor Jacob Frey, of Minneapolis. Lots of progress is being made! Tom Homan will be meeting with him tomorrow in order to continue the discussion. Thank you for your attention to this matter! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP

Frey’s full remarks to the public reiterated that Minneapolis values its immigrant communities while demanding a pullback of federal surge operations. He insisted violent criminals should be held accountable for crimes, not for their origin, and announced plans to meet with Tom Homan the next day. Those words were intended to reassure residents while pushing back against federal tactics he views as overreach. The exchange reflects a city leader balancing political pressure with public safety messaging.

I spoke with President Trump today and appreciated the conversation. I expressed how much Minneapolis has benefited from our immigrant communities and was clear that my main ask is that Operation Metro Surge needs to end. The president agreed the present situation can’t continue.

Some federal agents will begin leaving the area tomorrow, and I will continue pushing for the rest involved in this operation to go.

Minneapolis will continue to cooperate with state and federal law enforcement on real criminal investigations — but we will not participate in unconstitutional arrests of our neighbors or enforce federal immigration law.

Violent criminals should be held accountable based on the crimes they commit, not based on where they are from.

I will continue working with all levels of government to keep our communities safe, keep crime down, and put Minneapolis residents first.

I plan to meet with Border Czar Tom Homan tomorrow to further discuss next steps.

Behind the scenes, administration officials have signaled impatience with the operation’s management and the way messaging around it has been handled. Reports say some immigration enforcement agents were frustrated after the shooting and the public narrative that followed, prompting the president to place Homan in charge. The appointment of a Border Czar with direct access to the White House aims to stabilize operations and deliver clearer directives to agents on the ground. That chain-of-command decision is being presented as necessary to ensure accountability and results.

Local and state leaders will now test whether federal pressure and local resistance can find a working compromise that protects public safety without provoking constitutional fights. The White House insists the effort targets criminals and public safety threats, not ordinary immigrants, and expects cooperation on criminal investigations to continue. City officials, however, are drawing firm lines about immigration enforcement and civil liberties, promising not to assist in detentions they deem unconstitutional. This standoff will likely shape how enforcement plays out and how federal teams operate in Minneapolis going forward.

Trump’s repeated public statements and the move to have Homan report directly to the president signal a sharper posture from the administration. They also raise questions about coordination among federal agencies and the clarity of rules guiding federal interventions in cities. As Homan prepares to meet local officials, the practical test will be whether federal teams can focus on criminals while respecting local legal boundaries and minimizing civilian harm. The outcome will matter for enforcement strategy and political narratives ahead of coming debates.

  • The need to deport Somalias cannot be negotiated. They are a drug on the economy and add nothing to the US either economically or politically. They are votes for sale.

  • Somalis were and are Illegally in America and their continued presence is an Unconstitutional and financial SCAM upon America and its Citizens! Every additional minute they remain in America is costing American Taxpayers massive amounts of money and a continuing Immigration Law Violation upon the Nation’s Sovereignty and American Citizenry which must always remain “Paramount” in all such matters of “Foreign Invasion” or otherwise known as “Illegal Immigration” according to the US Constitution! Therefore ALL such Somalis MUST be Deported Immediately!
