When private misconduct persists even after vows and public reassurances, the claim of transformation loses credibility fast.

Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed offers another textbook example of the problem. As fresh reports circulated about comments he made as recently as 2024 on controversial topics like the Second Amendment, his campaign said those remarks were being “cherry-picked” and insisted he no longer holds those views. That defense is familiar: label the evidence selective, offer a softer present-day line, and hope voters move on without a full accounting of the record.

His campaign accused CNN of having “cherry-picked comments from old podcasts” that “don’t reflect his beliefs today,” pointing to a 2025 social media post in which he told followers to enjoy Fourth of July fireworks and insisting El-Sayed respects the Second Amendment, but also supports gun control.

That exact passage is a perfect example of how campaigns try to control narrative by pointing to one benign moment while ignoring a longer pattern. You can point to a natural-sounding social media post and claim it represents the candidate’s true state, but the public can still see a string of statements and actions that tell a different story. Voters deserve the full context, not a highlight reel designed to neutralize scrutiny.

Democratic officials tied to the DSA are subject to the same pattern. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Francesca Hong have tried to minimize or dismiss earlier “woke” positions as a phase or a mistake. AOC calling the era “crazy” and urging people to move on is a rhetorical dodge; Hong blaming her statements on a time when she was running a restaurant strains credibility when those comments were often made after she held office.

Words matter, and history matters even more. A candidate who tweets or proclaims radical positions while holding public office cannot easily erase that record by saying they were in a different headspace. When policy positions affect public safety, law enforcement, and constitutional rights, consistency is not optional—it is essential to voter trust.

Republican campaigns are increasingly prepared for these maneuvers. In Michigan and Wisconsin, opponents have been ready with documentation and archived statements that contradict the “I’ve evolved” narrative. That readiness matters because it forces the conversation back onto verifiable facts and away from polished, late-stage image repairs.

It is maddening to watch the same playbook deployed: deny, soften, reframe, and hope the public forgets. But Republicans are pointing out that voters are not blank slates; citizens remember what candidates have said and done, and they will use that record to evaluate trustworthiness. Elections should reward consistency and honesty, not strategic reinvention right before voters cast their ballots.

The prevalence of these convenient evolutions raises a basic question about accountability. If a politician truly changes, there will be a demonstrable pattern of corrected behavior over time and public acknowledgement of past errors, not just carefully timed retractions when controversy breaks. The difference between genuine evolution and political spin is the presence or absence of sustained, verifiable change.
