The NFC South race is shaping up to be less of a fight and more of a formality, and this week’s matchup between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers could make that clearer than ever.

The Buccaneers sit at 1-5 on the season, and even the anticipated return of quarterback Baker Mayfield is unlikely to fix an offense that has struggled all year. The New Orleans Saints have been unremarkable, and the Atlanta Falcons, briefly intriguing earlier in the season, have slid back into irrelevance. That leaves the Panthers, under head coach Dave Canales, with a largely open path to a second straight division title.

According to NY Post sports gambling editor Matt Ehalt, now in his third season producing the paper’s NFL Bettor’s Guide, Carolina enters this game in a near must-win mindset if it wants to assert itself as the class of the division.

The numbers back up the optimism in Carolina. The Panthers rank fourth in the league in points per game at 29.2, second in total yards per game at 404.4, and first in passing yards per game at 295.6. Quarterback Bryce Young has shown signs of developing into a franchise-caliber passer, finding consistent success throwing to receivers Jalen Coker and Tet McMillan.

That passing attack lines up well against a Tampa Bay defense that ranks second in the NFL against the run but just 18th against the pass. Last week, Buccaneers quarterback Aaron Rodgers rallied his team from a 16-3 fourth-quarter deficit to beat Tampa Bay 26-19 in overtime after a slow start, picking apart the secondary late.

Carolina’s offense has been especially productive at home this season, scoring 37 points against the Chicago Bears and 32 against the Detroit Lions, both playoff-caliber opponents. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay has topped 20 points only once with backup quarterback Jalon Daniels under center, and that came against a Dallas Cowboys defense that has struggled throughout the year.

Ehalt’s betting guidance favors Carolina to win by at least a field goal, citing the Panthers’ stronger motivation and offensive balance against a Tampa Bay team that has largely bottomed out this season.
