Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has sent a fundraising email to supporters built around the federal raid on her Washington, D.C. home earlier this week, according to a report from The Hill.
On Monday, agents with the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) executed a search warrant at Omar’s D.C. residence, an action that points to an immigration-related federal inquiry.
In the days since, Omar’s office has turned to the episode as a campaign appeal. A fundraising email, headlined “Stand with Ilhan Omar,” was obtained in screenshot form by NewsNation, a partner network of The Hill.
“Donald Trump and DHS have opened a baseless, partisan investigation into Ilhan Omar, and she needs us by her side as they escalate their attacks.”
The email closes with a direct ask: “Chip in whatever you can to make sure Ilhan can beat Trump and keep fighting for our progressive values in Congress.”
Omar has said she believes the investigation is retaliation for her left-wing political positions rather than the product of any criminal evidence against her.
Administration Officials Describe a Longer-Running Probe
Trump administration officials have pushed back on the suggestion that the raid was a sudden or politically timed action. Border czar Tom Homan said this week that the “investigation was ongoing for a while.”
“There was a warrant executed this morning, so I’ll leave it at that. The specifics of the investigation, I think I need to turn that over to [Attorney General] Todd Blanche or [DHS Secretary] Markwayne Mullin.”
Jonathan Fahey, former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, told the New York Post this week that obtaining a judicial warrant from a D.C. judge to search a sitting member of Congress’s home is not routine, and suggested it reflects that investigators had established “probable cause” that Omar committed immigration-related crimes.
No charges have been announced in connection with the investigation. The specific allegations under review have not been publicly detailed by DHS, the Justice Department, or HSI.
