A new poll out of Iowa shows Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson holding a narrow lead over Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek in the race for U.S. Senate, while Democrat Rob Sand leads Republican Zach Lahn in the contest for governor.
Political Polls reported Monday that Hinson sits at 47 percent to Turek’s 44 percent. The gap has narrowed slightly since a poll released the prior week, with Turek picking up some ground.
Turek’s record in the Iowa legislature includes votes against three bills that would have restricted DEI policies in the state’s public schools. He has also shifted positions on welfare benefits for illegal immigrants, and in an official legislative newsletter he offered illegal immigrants guidance on how to avoid ICE detention.
Hinson’s campaign website lays out a contrasting message on immigration and public safety: “Every family deserves to feel safe in their home and community. Ashley believes public safety starts with enforcing our laws, supporting law enforcement, and securing our border. She’ll continue fighting for commonsense policies that protect Iowa families while ensuring our immigration system is fair, lawful, and secure.”
Governor’s Race: Sand Holds Bigger Lead
In the governor’s race, the same Political Polls survey put Sand at 50 percent and Lahn at 45 percent.
Sand attends a church described as “far-left ‘LGBTQ+ Open and Affirming'” that hosts drag shows and incorporates gender-ideology-based sex education for children. He has also voiced support for expanding H-1B visas to bring in more foreign workers for white-collar jobs, a position critics argue could come at the expense of young Iowans seeking those same careers.
Lahn has gone after Sand’s political positioning directly, calling him “a radically liberal Democrat that is running as a moderate.”
The dueling polls land amid broader national findings on voter sentiment ahead of the midterms. A weekly Economist/YouGov survey found that most voters say their minds are already made up on how they’ll vote, though a meaningful share remain persuadable.
