The federal government has been shut down for 40 days, gridlock in the Senate is worsening, and President Trump is publicly blasting Democrats, insurance companies, and critics of his trade policies while urging direct payments to Americans as a fix for Obamacare subsidies and promising a dividend tied to tariffs and economic gains.

The shutdown has now eclipsed prior records and its effects are starting to ripple into travel and commerce just ahead of the Thanksgiving rush. Senators remain deadlocked over a continuing resolution that Democrats insist must include extended COVID-era subsidies for Obamacare, subsidies that were set to expire after 2025. Frustration is rising across the country, and the scene in Washington shows little sign of compromise.

Democrats have repeatedly voted down the continuing resolution, and the stalemate has forced multiple failed attempts in the Senate to pass a clean CR. Public patience is wearing thin, and President Trump has been especially vocal, using his platform to call out what he sees as a corrupt system. Over the weekend he doubled down publicly, arguing for a dramatic shift in how health subsidies are handled.

In his view, taxpayer dollars should flow directly to citizens so they can shop for their own coverage, instead of padding the profits of major insurance firms. That argument hits two points Republicans often make: give people control over their money, and stop rewarding corporate winners carved out by government policy. The president framed this as both a populist and pro-market solution, attacking what he called the enrichment of insurers under Obamacare.

On Saturday he launched a second, all-caps broadside at the:

NO MORE MONEY, HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, TO THE DEMOCRAT SUPPORTED INSURANCE COMPANIES FOR REALLY BAD OBAMACARE. THE MONEY MUST NOW GO DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE, TAKING THE “FAT CAT” INSURANCE COMPANIES OUT OF THE CORRUPT SYSTEM OF HEALTHCARE. THE PEOPLE CAN BUY THEIR OWN, MUCH BETTER POLICY, FOR MUCH LESS MONEY, SAVING, FOR THEMSELVES, AN ABSOLUTE FORTUNE!!! PRESIDENT DJT

There is an obvious tension in that proposal: consumers would still end up buying policies from insurers, but sending funds directly to people would increase choice and create bargaining power at the point of purchase. Even if federal bureaucracy still siphons fees, moving dollars closer to individuals reduces middlemen and opens the door to competition. Politics will shape the final form, but the core idea—empower consumers—is politically attractive.

He followed up with another message pointing to the market winners and losers since Obamacare became law, calling out skyrocketing insurer stock prices and rising premiums for Americans. Trump used hard numbers and sharp rhetoric to make the case that the current system has enriched a few while saddling the many with higher costs. To him, the cure is simple: stop enriching insurers and start empowering families.

And again, :

I am sorry that the American People are being terrorized by Democrats who have decided to shut the Government down to make me and other Republicans continue ObamaCare subsidies, which have been a windfall for Health Insurance Companies, and a DISASTER for the American People. The largest Health Insurance Companies have seen their Stock Prices soar (Some over 1000%!) since the passage of ObamaCare. Meanwhile, Americans’ Premiums have more than DOUBLED, contrary to President Obama’s promise. I believe that the money should go directly to THE PEOPLE to purchase better Healthcare, and create competition. This enrichment of Health Insurance companies must stop. It is long past time to lower Premiums, not enrich Insurance Companies. I stand ready to work with both Parties to solve this problem once the Government is open. Stop terrorizing the American People. Stop pushing failed policies!

Stock market gains for health insurers are real, and those gains have become a political issue when lawmakers who write the rules also profit from market moves. That alone fuels distrust and reinforces arguments for a system where citizens, not connected insiders, are the primary beneficiaries of health funding. Republicans can sell that as a transparency and accountability win.

The president also took aim at opponents of his tariff strategy, arguing that tariffs have helped the economy, boosted investment, and created leverage for a national dividend idea. He tied tariff proceeds to a proposed per-person payout and used economic indicators to claim that his approach has strengthened the country’s position. That message leans on economic nationalism and direct returns to citizens.

President Trump launched another broadside at those who oppose his trade policy :

People that are against Tariffs are FOOLS! We are now the Richest, Most Respected Country In the World, With Almost No Inflation, and A Record Stock Market Price. 401k’s are Highest EVER. We are taking in Trillions of Dollars and will soon begin paying down our ENORMOUS DEBT, $37 Trillion. Record Investment in the USA, plants and factories going up all over the place. A dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone

Not everyone buys the dividend pitch; some worry a $2,000 payout could be a short-term political tool rather than a long-term fix, while others point to the nation’s enormous debt as the bigger threat. The Alaska model is often invoked as a precedent for per-resident payouts, but the national fiscal picture is far different. Still, the proposal puts a populist stamp on a trade-and-tariff argument that Republicans can rally around.

Trump’s weekend posts were blunt and unapologetic, the kind of raw commentary his supporters expect. He framed the battle as one between a corrupt status quo and a more direct, citizen-focused way of handling federal funds. The rhetoric is sharp, the policy ideas are bold, and the political fight over the shutdown shows no signs of cooling.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
