Lauren Sánchez Bezos, the wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, drew heavy criticism on social media after appearing at a White House state dinner in honor of Chinese President Xi Jinping wearing a black off-the-shoulder dress with a plunging neckline.
The 56-year-old former journalist paired the fitted gown with diamond drop earrings and a large diamond necklace as she attended the dinner alongside her husband.
Reaction on X was swift and largely negative, with many users saying the outfit was not appropriate for the occasion.
“Money does not buy one class. She dresses terribly. So inappropriate,” one user wrote.
“Why are they invited to an event and eating on the tax payer dime?” another asked.
“Have some dignity for goodness sake. This is a state dinner and you are 56 years old,” wrote another.
Not everyone agreed with the criticism. Some users defended Sánchez Bezos’s right to wear what she pleased and said she looked good.
“Who else doesn’t care and thinks she should wear whatever she wants?!!!” one user asked.
“She looks great, and Jeff is very lucky to be her husband,” another wrote.
“She’s come a long way from being the entertainment reporter on the local LA news station,” a third user wrote. “Good for her.”
This is not the first time Sánchez Bezos’s clothing choices at a major Washington event have sparked debate online. At President Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, she wore a white Alexander McQueen pantsuit with a low-cut V-neck blazer over a white lace bustier, an outfit that also drew sharp online commentary at the time.
“Good grief, Lauren Sanchez. Put them away for one day,” one user wrote following the inauguration.
“Really, a bra plainly visible. Today is NOT a night club event. Show some class & dignity,” another wrote.
