Agents from the Department of Homeland Security recently apprehended a foreign exchange student at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. The student, Badar Khan Suri, was accused of “actively spreading Hamas propaganda.” This arrest took place outside his Virginia residence, as detailed in a lawsuit filed by his attorney, Hassan Ahmad.
Ahmad contends that Suri’s arrest is rooted in discrimination due to the Palestinian heritage of his wife, who holds American citizenship. However, DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin counters this claim. She insists Suri maintains “close connections to a known or suspected terrorist,” linked to Hamas.

Suri’s academic role at Georgetown is documented on his faculty page. He is listed as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. This center is part of the prestigious Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service.
The lawsuit declares that Suri has no criminal history. Despite this, allegations linger regarding his wife, Mapheze Saleh, and her supposed connections to Hamas. Saleh is said to have worked for Al Jazeera, adding to the controversy.
An article from the Hindustan Times in 2018 further complicates matters. It reports that Saleh’s father, Ahmed Yousef, was a senior political advisor to Hamas. This familial connection raises questions about potential biases against Suri and his wife.
Conservative commentator Marina Medvin highlighted more connections. She revealed that Suri’s father-in-law, Yousef, had founded a think tank tied to Hamas. This think tank was reportedly active in the United States from 1989 to 2004.
This center, the United Association for Studies and Research, allegedly had links to Georgetown officials. It was purportedly a front for Hamas activities, including propaganda. The think tank’s ties to Georgetown cast a shadow on the university’s affiliations.
Medvin questioned Georgetown’s associations with such entities. She expressed concern over the university’s employment of individuals connected to Hamas. These claims have sparked broader discussions about academic and ideological affiliations.
