Elon Musk made headlines at the 10th Annual Breakthrough Prize Ceremony in Los Angeles when news broke about his latest initiative. The list of canceled initiatives is extensive. It includes $22 million meant for Moldova’s political process and $40 million for a gender equality hub. Other notable cuts include $47 million intended to improve learning outcomes in Asia and $32 million for the Prague Civil Society Centre.
In Nepal, funding for “fiscal federalism” and “biodiversity conservation” totaling $39 million has been canceled. Mali’s $14 million for social cohesion and Serbia’s $14 million for improving public procurement are also on the chopping block. Mozambique’s voluntary medical male circumcision program, slated to receive $10 million, has been halted as well.
In California, UC Berkeley’s project to develop entrepreneurial skills among Cambodian youth lost its $9.7 million funding. Efforts to promote inclusive democracies in Southern Africa and strengthen independent voices in Cambodia also saw their funds withdrawn. Smaller initiatives, like sustainable recycling models in Kosovo and voter confidence projects in Liberia, faced similar fates.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the previous Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) for allegedly attempting to meddle in India’s elections through foreign funding. BJP leader Nalin Kohli expressed concerns over U.S. involvement, questioning the motives behind the $21 million allocation.
India’s Congress Party, however, dismissed these allegations, finding them laughable and baseless. Amit Malviya, BJP’s IT cell convener, went further, labeling the grant as external interference in India’s electoral process. In a separate statement, Malviya implicated George Soros, a well-known associate of the Congress Party and the Gandhis.
