West Virginia and Wyoming recently joined the ranks of states that have decided to ban ranked-choice voting (RCV), bringing the total to 13 states that have made this move. This battle over the voting system has been ongoing for nearly a decade, with more states choosing to ban or not implement RCV than those adopting it.

RCV is a process where voters rank candidates, and if no one gets a majority, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, allowing second-choice votes to be counted until a candidate achieves a majority.

Proponents of RCV argue that it results in elections that better reflect the will of the people, encouraging positive campaigning and offering more choices to voters. They also claim it can save money by eliminating the need for separate runoff elections.

On the other hand, critics, including election integrity advocates, warn about the risks of increased dark money in RCV elections and concerns from groups like the NAACP about voter confusion.

Currently, only Alaska and Maine use RCV statewide, with a few counties and cities also adopting it. Maine was the pioneer, implementing RCV statewide in 2018.

The movement to ban RCV gained momentum in places like Florida and Tennessee in 2022, followed by states like Idaho, Montana, and South Dakota in 2023, along with Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Oklahoma.

Last year’s attempts to implement RCV through ballot measures largely failed, with Washington, D.C. being the only area to pass such a measure. This came after the Democratic Party in the city lost a legal battle trying to prevent the initiative from appearing on the ballot. States like Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Oregon rejected similar measures.

Wyoming’s Governor Mark Gordon recently signed a bill into law that bans RCV. The bill clearly states that candidates with the most votes in general elections win, and any attempt to use RCV is void. Jason Snead of the Honest Elections Project praised Wyoming for this decision, stating that RCV makes voting more complicated and less trustworthy.

Snead highlighted the role of Wyoming’s state officials, including Secretary of State Chuck Gray, in leading the charge against RCV.

He emphasized that Wyoming is known for its commitment to election integrity, pointing out that banning RCV and private election funding helps maintain honest elections. Wyoming is also noted for being the first state to block foreign influence in state ballot measures starting in 2025.

In West Virginia, Governor Patrick Morrisey also signed a bill banning RCV, prohibiting its use in any state, county, or local elections. The bill ensures that any ordinance conflicting with this ban is void. West Virginia Secretary of State Kris Warner praised the legislature for passing the bill, noting that RCV complicates the voting process and can lead to unexpected election outcomes.

Warner emphasized that fair, accurate, and secure elections are crucial, and West Virginia’s traditional voting method ensures transparency and simplicity. He expressed gratitude to the legislature for acting quickly on this important legislation. Snead also remarked on West Virginia’s strong track record of election integrity, applauding the decision to outlaw RCV.

Trent England, from Save Our States, criticized RCV as a failed reform that has not met the promises made by its proponents. He argued that RCV disenfranchises certain voters, delays results, and can lead to the election of fringe candidates. England appreciates the swift action by states to ban RCV, ensuring that elections remain straightforward and trustworthy.

  • That’s what I’m talking about!!! Good for them and some real American Patriotism at work!

Far too long the Marxist/Leftist Radicals have been slicing away at America trying to produce the old death by a thousand cuts! Those are cuts that are inflicted to draw blood and kill, so now we have to cancel them out 100% as in NO COMMIES ALLOWED!

You hear that Demoncrap/rino party, you are going down in more ways than one!

  • We must protect our voting process 100% as it was for centuries. IMHO, this is the “root cause” of many of our serious issues that we are faced with today. Elections have consequences and the anti-American left knows this. The American citizens have shown this, time and time again, that they do not want collective ideological type (Marxist) state run formatted policies and if a group of unelected ideologues can manipulate just how our ballots are tabulated at all levels of our elections, watch out?

From same day registration to this RCV, to Illegal Aliens being permitted to vote to mail-in ballots w/o signature verification, to election season and even post election ballot counting, etc. This was not the way of democratic way of electing representatives was supposed to work. And the LEFT knows it.

  • Donny Ravas, that is again spot-on and the game they are playing; these Diabolical Satan worshiping Marxists among us and throughout our government system! If total election integrity that was once a given in this Nation of ours isn’t completely restored, then these “Criminals and Leftist Marxists Enemies Within” will gain total control and the “American Way” with its “Freedom and Justice” we’ve known will be no more!
