A Kansas church pastor running for U.S. Senate as a Democrat voted for Kamala Harris in 2024 and donated $500 to her campaign, according to a resurfaced video and federal election filings reviewed by Breitbart News, even as he markets himself to voters as a “different kind of Democrat.”
Adam Hamilton, founding and senior pastor of the Church of the Resurrection, is challenging Republican Sen. Roger Marshall for his Kansas seat. In a November 7 video posted to his “Making Sense of Faith” YouTube channel, Hamilton explained his decision to back Harris over President Trump in the 2024 election.
“I probably lean more towards a concern for the weak, the vulnerable — justice weighs heavily for me. And I felt like I saw more of that on the Harris side,” Hamilton said in the video.
Hamilton told viewers his vote also reflected a desire to “break down a barrier” for women, pointing to what Harris’s candidacy could mean “for little girls like my granddaughter.” He acknowledged there were parts of Trump’s agenda he found agreeable and parts of Harris’s platform he did not support, but said his overall sympathies tilted toward Harris.
On the former president, Hamilton did not mince words. “I would say I am anxious about President Trump. He’s a disrupter,” he said, adding that Trump “tends to make decisions in ways that are not collaborative” and “doesn’t seem to pay attention to the facts very carefully.”
“I think what happened in January 6th four years ago was a disqualifier from my perspective,” Hamilton said.
Hamilton added that despite his concerns, he intends to “pray for” Trump and be “supportive” now that he has been elected. He also noted he has voted for Republicans for president in the past but “could not get excited about” Trump this time.
Federal Election Commission records show Hamilton contributed $500 to Harris’s campaign on July 23, 2024 — two days after President Biden dropped out of the race. The filing lists his employer as Church of the Resurrection and his occupation as pastor. The contribution appears in Harris for President’s amended August 2024 monthly report with a memo line tied to the Harris Victory Fund.
The disclosures emerge days before Trump is scheduled to rally for Marshall in Kansas on October 19, with the November election now bearing down on both campaigns.
Immigration, Clemency, and Theology Under Scrutiny
Hamilton has publicly backed “a path to citizenship for hardworking, law-abiding immigrants.” In a 2018 sermon, he urged listeners to view family-separation news stories “in the light of what Jesus said about what happens when you harm children.”
Hamilton also served on President Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. A January 2016 report from that council recommended expanding eligibility for commutations and pardons under Obama’s Clemency Initiative and easing barriers to applications. Every council member but one, Naseem Kourosh, who abstained, supported the recommendations.
Several individuals whose sentences Obama later commuted went on to face new criminal charges, including Alton Mills, accused of murder in an Illinois road-rage shooting; Joseph Burgos, charged after investigators said they recovered nearly 2,000 fentanyl-laced oxycodone pills; and Bobby Gill, sentenced to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty in a cocaine case.
A Republican-aligned effort, Kansans for Marshall, has set up a website, RealAdamHamilton.com, cataloging Hamilton’s sermons and ties to national Democratic figures. The site highlights the Church of the Resurrection’s sponsorship of Kansas City PrideFest, including promotion of “Youth & Teen Tents,” and notes Hamilton’s appearance on an invitation for a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee reception alongside Senate Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer — despite Hamilton saying he would not support Schumer.
The site also surfaces a sermon in which Hamilton asked, “How many Islamic terrorist acts have been committed in Kansas City?… I can’t think of any,” before noting he could recall people killed “by people who were either Christians or at least somehow shaped by Christianity.”
During a 2015 panel hosted by the LGBTQ-affirming Reformation Project, Hamilton said conversations with congregants who came out to him as gay prompted him to reconsider his scriptural interpretations, asking, “How much latitude do we have to push back on it? Where can we say, you know, ‘Here I think Paul’s wrong?'”
Hamilton has said his views began shifting during a 2001 sermon series. In a January 2025 sermon, he argued that churches barring women from preaching had misread Paul’s letters, and he has separately said the Bible contains “hundreds” of mistakes or errors.
