A former Delta Tau Delta pledge master at Northern Arizona University was sentenced Wednesday to two months in jail for his role in a hazing incident that killed a fellow student.
Carter Eslick, 20, pleaded guilty to a felony hazing charge in Coconino County Superior Court in connection with the Jan. 31 death of Colin Daniel Martinez. Eslick was serving as the fraternity’s pledge master when Martinez died at the Delta Tau Delta off-campus house in Flagstaff from alcohol poisoning. An autopsy found his blood-alcohol content at 0.45% shortly after death.
According to NBC News, Martinez was one of four pledges made to drink two bottles of vodka during the hazing ritual, with the goal of making them vomit. Witnesses said they later tried to monitor Martinez as he slept, repositioning him multiple times out of concern over possible alcohol poisoning.
Martinez’s parents were present in the courtroom when Eslick addressed the court.
“I take full responsibility for the hand I played in that ritual,” Eslick told the court.
The case is part of a broader string of fraternity-related incidents drawing national attention this year, including the deaths of two Ole Miss students and an alleged cocaine distribution operation tied to a fraternity at Penn State.
