A Florida homeowner says his dog stumbled onto something no leash law prepares you for: a crab clutching what appears to be a pocket-knife in its claw.

Eduardo Alvarez posted footage to Instagram of his dog, Summer, sniffing around the animal before it swiped toward the pup with the blade. Alvarez’s caption read simply, “Florida is getting out of hand.”

In the clip, Alvarez rushes in to pull Summer away, then wrestles to grab the crab itself. “Summer, where the heck did you find a crab with a freaking shank?” he says, clearly caught off guard. Once he finally gets hold of it and carries it off into the yard, he adds, “Summer, I don’t recommend messing with this. This is a gangster-ass crab.”

Based on the footage, the animal appears to be a blue land crab, a species found in Florida typically within about five miles of the coast. They can span up to 12 inches across and weigh roughly a pound. What the crab was doing with what looks like a pocket-knife, and how it got hold of one, remains unexplained.

The video has racked up more than 20 million views since it was posted Wednesday, drawing a mix of amusement and disbelief. One commenter wrote, “I don’t know what’s more surprising; a crab with a shank or you just lifting him up like its an everyday occurrence.” Another said, “You can tell it’s Florida cuz he picked it up while laughing.” Some viewers questioned whether the footage was AI-generated.

This isn’t the first time a crab has turned up armed on camera. In 2022, Michigan native Kyle King, now living in Japan, filmed a coconut crab holding a steak knife outside his tent at 2 a.m. during a camping trip.
