A Facebook comment in which a father urged his son to come home for a visit has drawn attention days after that son, a New York Times executive, was fatally shot in a Dublin, California parking lot in what prosecutors call a planned ambush by his 77-year-old in-laws.
Jonathan McKinsey, 40, posted a smiling photo of himself to Facebook on Sept. 7. His father, William Finney II, replied beneath the post: “Jon, hope everything is going well. Hope you can visit us when you have some free time. Mom and Dad love you so much and miss you. Hope everything goes well with you and Candice and the kids.”
Less than three weeks later, McKinsey was shot and killed in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds in Alameda County. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged his in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, with murder, alleging they intentionally killed McKinsey by “lying in wait.”
What Happened in the Parking Lot
Several 911 callers reported gunfire before a Dublin Police Services sergeant arrived and found McKinsey suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Witnesses directed officers to a black Honda Civic leaving the scene, and police conducted a high-risk traffic stop nearby. Court documents allege Chen was driving and Zhang was in the passenger seat.
Three witnesses identified Chen and Zhang as the shooters, and surveillance video allegedly shows the couple firing on McKinsey “in concert.” Police allege the shooting took place in a crowded lot with “blatant disregard for public safety” while several children were nearby. According to court documents, Zhang later admitted to investigators that he shot McKinsey, and police recovered a second gun he allegedly admitted using.
A Bitter Divorce and Competing Allegations
McKinsey’s death came in the middle of a contentious divorce, a child custody dispute, and competing domestic violence cases involving his estranged wife, Candice Jang. Court dockets reviewed by Fox News Digital show the couple had further hearings scheduled, including a family law status conference set for Oct. 2 and a three-day domestic violence restraining order hearing set for December.
McKinsey filed for divorce in December. KTVU reported the couple had been married 14 years and were living apart, with Jang holding sole legal and physical custody of their three children.
Court records show Jang obtained a temporary restraining order in October 2025. About two months later, McKinsey sought his own restraining order roughly a week before hers was set to expire. McKinsey alleged Jang abused him physically and emotionally on a weekly basis and mistreated their children.
