Nobody Wants This creator Erin Foster says she and her writers are prepared to return for a fourth season of the Netflix rom-com if the streamer asks, but no renewal has been announced.
The show, loosely based on Foster’s own relationship, wrapped its third season with Noah (Adam Brody) and Joanne (Kristen Bell) marrying after their families narrowly avoided an all-out feud. Foster told Decider the production team is waiting on Netflix’s decision before assembling a writers room.
“Yeah, I mean we’re, you know, we’re always open,” Foster said of a potential Season 4. “I think as the season comes out and we see people’s reactions, then, you know, we wait for the call, and we’re ready to go if they want us.”
Much of the fan pressure for another season centers on the relationship between Morgan (Justine Lupe) and Sasha (Timothy Simons), who moved from friends to a romantic entanglement in Season 3 after a trip to New York City. Foster said the storyline, along with Esther (Jackie Tohn) finally pursuing her own relationship, came together through work by writers Jenni Konner and Megan Mazer.
“It really, it really reveals itself, you know? I mean, we really needed to clean up him and Esther in Season 2 and end with him and Morgan as friends with an asterisk of like ‘it’s complicated,'” Foster said. “And Morgan is just struggling to be herself and be with someone who appreciates her for who she is. And she doesn’t wanna be in a toxic relationship so it all just kind of merged together in the perfect way.”
Season 3 also drops hints about Morgan’s toxic ex-husband, who reportedly ruined a birthday trip to New York and is referenced again in Episode 7. Foster confirmed the character could finally appear on screen if the show returns.
“Yes, definitely. It’s funny, because kind of every season we’ve thought, ‘Do we bring her ex-husband into the mix?’ And we haven’t really known which way we want to go with it. And so I do think that if we do a fourth season, we would want to meet him,” Foster said.
Nobody Wants This Season 3 is now streaming on Netflix. The streamer has not confirmed whether a fourth season is in production.
