Questions linger about what “vetted” really meant in this case, and the National Counterterrorism Center director under President Trump has been blunt in answering them. Joe Kent explained that the vetting used then was limited to screening for battlefield roles in Afghanistan, not for suitability to live in the United States. That distinction matters because it explains how someone useful as a combat ally overseas could still pose a domestic threat.

It is true that the terrorist who conducted the attack in D.C. was “vetted” by the intelligence community, however he was only vetted to serve as a soldier to fight against the Taliban, AQ, & ISIS IN Afghanistan, he was NOT vetted for his suitability to come to America and live among us as a neighbor, integrate into our communities, or eventually become an American citizen.

Director Kent went further, saying that the standards applied during the withdrawal did not match the more rigorous checks historically used for Special Immigrant Visas. He argued the administration traded caution for speed during the evacuation, a tradeoff that, in Kent’s view, put Americans at risk. That critique mirrors broader GOP concerns about operational decisions that prioritized volume over vetting.

During Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, his administration negligently used the vetting standard described above as the standard for being brought directly into the U.S., foregoing previous vetting standards applied to Special Immigrant Visas and any common sense vetting or concern for Americans.

He stated that over 85k Afghans were admitted rapidly without the rigorous vetting previously required, and that immigration from Muslim-majority regions surged with more than 2 million individuals arriving during the prior term. Those figures fuel the Republican argument that current intake levels plus weak screening equal a national-security blind spot.

As a result, over 85k Afghans—including individuals with backgrounds similar to this shooter— were rapidly admitted into our country without the rigorous vetting that has protected us in the past. And that’s just Afghans; broader immigration from Muslim majority nations & regions surged, with over 2 million individuals entering during Biden’s term, often with minimal scrutiny amid record border crossings. This is a deadly combination.

For Republicans, the solution is straightforward and uncompromising: restore strong vetting, pause admissions where necessary, and remove those who pose threats. The counterterrorism director even summarized the belief behind recent conservative demands: the DC attack happened because those who were admitted were not adequately screened. That blunt assessment has driven calls for swift removals and policy changes.

Conservative voices have pushed for decisive action, including mass deportations of those deemed dangerous and a return to stricter vetting standards across the board. Former national security officials aligned with the Trump administration have echoed the urgency of sweeping reforms. These proposals reflect a hardline view that national security must trump leniency when lives are at stake.
