In a fiery new development, the House Administration Oversight Subcommittee, led by Chairman Barry Loudermilk, released an explosive interim report on Tuesday regarding the January 6 Capitol riot. The report concluded the attack was preventable while calling for an FBI investigation into former Rep. Liz Cheney for alleged witness tampering and possible criminal misconduct during the Democrat-led investigation of the events surrounding January 6.
The subcommittee’s findings allege that Cheney, the former Vice Chair of the January 6 Select Committee, secretly communicated with star witness Cassidy Hutchinson without notifying Hutchinson’s legal counsel—an action described in the report as improper and potentially criminal under federal law.
“Based on the evidence obtained by this Subcommittee, numerous federal laws were likely broken by Liz Cheney… these violations should be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the report stated. It specifically cites potential violations of 18 U.S.C. 1512, a law criminalizing witness tampering, which carries penalties of up to 20 years in prison.
At the center of the accusations is Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide and Cheney’s star witness during the highly publicized hearings. The report alleges Cheney influenced Hutchinson’s testimony, including key claims that have since been contradicted or cast into doubt.
One of the most sensational allegations Hutchinson made was that former President Donald Trump attempted to physically seize control of his presidential limousine to drive to the Capitol. The Secret Service has directly refuted this claim, undermining its credibility. The GOP subcommittee report also points to a handwritten note Hutchinson claimed to have written, alleging that Cheney played a role in encouraging false testimony related to the document.
The report goes further, suggesting Cheney may have violated 18 U.S.C. 1622, which prohibits procuring perjury. Loudermilk and the committee argue that Hutchinson lied under oath and that Cheney played an active role in the development of her testimony.
“The Federal Bureau of Investigation must also investigate Representative Cheney for violating 18 U.S.C. 1622… Based on the evidence obtained by this Subcommittee, Hutchinson committed perjury when she lied under oath to the Select Committee,” the report reads.
Adding further intrigue, the report alleges collusion between Special Counsel Jack Smith and the January 6 Select Committee, which was chaired by Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) alongside Cheney. Loudermilk’s findings suggest Smith improperly accessed unredacted witness transcripts, which were supposed to remain unavailable or incomplete.
“When Smith released a trove of documents in October that were used in his filings in the Trump case, present in the batch was an unredacted transcript from one Jan. 6 Select Committee interview with a witness,” the report states. The committee concluded that Smith likely received the unredacted transcript from either the Select Committee or the White House, both of which, the report alleges, failed to cooperate fully with GOP oversight efforts.
These claims add to mounting concerns about the integrity of the Democrat-led investigation, with the House GOP alleging significant evidence was destroyed, lost, or deliberately withheld. Specifically, the subcommittee points out that over one terabyte of data—including videos of witness interviews—was not preserved, a failure that raises further questions about transparency and accountability.
The interim report also sheds new light on Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s role, citing previously unaired footage captured for an HBO documentary produced by Pelosi’s daughter. In the footage, Pelosi reportedly acknowledges partial responsibility for security failures at the Capitol on January 6, contradicting her previous public stance.
Further, the report highlights delays by Department of Defense officials in deploying National Guard troops to secure the Capitol, despite standing orders from President Donald Trump to maintain safety during his speech and at the Capitol grounds. These findings add weight to GOP arguments that the events of January 6 could have been prevented with better preparation and leadership.
In a letter accompanying the interim report, Loudermilk urged his House colleagues to address the broader issue of political manipulation within Congress, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability.
“Americans expect and deserve a government that is small in size, limited in scope, and fully accountable to the people, as our Founders intended,” Loudermilk wrote. “The actions of some elected officials and certain government bureaucrats in the aftermath of January 6, 2021, are evidence of how we have ventured far away from those basic principles of our constitutional republic.”
He further called for a return to governance that values “transparency, accountability, and equal application of the law,” which, he argued, is the only way to restore public trust.
The House GOP’s interim report represents a significant escalation in the fight over January 6 narratives. By accusing Liz Cheney of witness tampering and possible perjury violations, the committee is calling for a deeper investigation that could have serious legal and political ramifications. The allegations of missing evidence, collusion with Jack Smith, and Pelosi’s acknowledgment of security failures only add to the controversy, painting a picture of a flawed and politically motivated inquiry into the events of that tragic day.
With calls for FBI intervention and renewed scrutiny of the January 6 Select Committee’s practices, this report is sure to reignite debates over accountability, transparency, and the role of partisanship in congressional investigations.
