The search for Joseph A. Couch is escalating in Laurel County, Kentucky, after a tumultuous shooting incident that resulted in five people being injured and numerous vehicles being damaged along Interstate 75.

The violence, which took place at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, has prompted an extensive manhunt for Couch, who has been identified as a person of interest in the disruption of the weekend commute.

The ongoing search for Couch involves the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the FBI, U.S. Marshal Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Couch, a 32-year-old white male standing at approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 154 pounds, is considered to be armed and dangerous.

The incident was brought to the attention of authorities after reports of gunfire along the interstate in London, a rural area located about 75 miles south of Lexington.

Deputy Gilbert Acciardo of the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office described arriving at the scene as discovering “a madhouse,” with nine vehicles displaying signs of gunfire, bullet holes, and shattered windows. Acciardo mentioned during a Sunday news conference that it was chaotic.

The shooting victims are all currently in stable condition but have sustained serious injuries. One individual was shot in the face.

The violent incident also led to a vehicle accident that injured two more people. Traffic on the interstate was stopped in both directions for several hours while investigators secured the scene and gathered evidence.

Local officials, including London Mayor Randall Weddle, have urged residents to remain vigilant and indoors, especially during the overnight hours as searches in the nearby rugged terrain continued. “If you think you hear something outside of your home, please do not go outside shooting,” Mayor Weddle cautioned, highlighting the potential danger to residents and first responders in the area.

The reasons for the shooting are still not clear, as early inquiries have dismissed road rage as a probable factor. This event occurred shortly after a mass shooting in Winder, Georgia, and a separate interstate shooting in Seattle, highlighting a distressing week of gun violence nationwide.

Governor Andy Beshear has been closely monitoring the situation, receiving updates from the Kentucky State Police and the Office of Homeland Security. “I am actively monitoring the situation and offering support in any way possible,” Beshear stated, calling for prayers for all those involved.

Accounts from drivers stuck in the Saturday chaos reveal tales of bewilderment and terror. Christina DiNoto, who was passing through the area during the shooting, initially confused the gunfire for a rock hitting her car.

It wasn’t until later, when she and her companion stopped at a friend’s house, that they found out about the shooting and noticed what seemed to be bullet marks on her vehicle.

While the community grapples with the aftermath of the event and authorities continue their search for Couch, state legislators and local officials are urging the public to remain calm and collaborate.
