During a press conference, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis proposed a new state law that would combat the civil unrest in the state.
If passed as proposed, it’s called the ‘Combatting Violence, Disorder, and Looting and Law Enforcement Protection Act.’ It will be a focal point of the next legislative session. Governor DeSantis described it as the “boldest and most comprehensive piece of legislation to address these issues anywhere in the country.”
The new legislation will enhance penalties for crimes like assaulting law enforcement officers, taking down statues, and blocking roadways.
- Blocking roadways or toppling down statues will be considered a second-degree felony.
- Violent protesting and looting would be considered third-degree felonies.
- Mandatory jail time for anyone found guilty of throwing an object at law enforcement officers.
- No bail or bond until first appearance in court if charged with a crime related to violent or disorderly assembly.
- It will be a crime to harass innocent people in public.
