As the war between Ukraine and Russia rages on, it is the Ukrainian people who continue to bear the heaviest burden. Faced with relentless conscription efforts and high casualties on the frontlines, many Ukrainian men are taking drastic measures to avoid being sent to what they call the “meat grinder” of the battlefield.
According to Ukrainian politician and former MP Volodymyr Oleynyk, an estimated 1.5 million men of military age are currently in hiding within Ukraine, desperately trying to avoid conscription.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine has been under martial law, and conscription has become a grim reality for many. According to reports, Kiev’s military losses are staggering. The Russian Ministry of Defense estimates that over 500,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or wounded during the conflict. Many Ukrainians, unwilling to risk their lives, are doing whatever it takes to avoid being drafted into the army.
The exodus from Ukraine has been significant, with over 8 million citizens fleeing the country since the war began. While this includes women, children, and the elderly, a sizable number are military-aged men seeking refuge from forced conscription. However, for those who remain within Ukraine’s borders, life is filled with fear and isolation as they hide from the authorities.
The Daily Mail shared the story of Alex, a 34-year-old product manager from Kyiv who has been living in hiding for eight months. “I haven’t left my house in eight months,” Alex said. “I do my shopping online, work from home, and avoid going out. Even when my girlfriend gave birth to our daughter three months ago, I didn’t go to the hospital. I raise money for our forces, but I don’t want to kill people, and I don’t want to die.”
Another man, Roman, 33, an entrepreneur from Lviv, pays $1,000 a month for an exemption from conscription. “Eighty percent of my friends who went to fight have been killed, and I don’t want to join them,” Roman said. “By now we all know what happens.” Like Alex, Roman lives in self-imposed isolation, avoiding public transport and places where conscription officers are likely to be.
The issue of draft dodging is becoming a significant challenge for Ukraine. Desertion rates within the military are at an all-time high, with over 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers reportedly deserting their posts. As desperation grows, some men are even willing to pay for fake documents or bribes to escape conscription. However, not everyone can afford this, leaving many with no choice but to stay hidden at home.
In May 2024, Ukraine passed a law requiring all men between the ages of 25 and 60 to register for potential conscription. This move has only increased anxiety among Ukraine’s male population, with many fearing that they could be called to the frontlines at any moment. Meanwhile, reports suggest that Western allies, particularly the United States, are pressuring Ukraine to lower the military draft age to 18, aligning it with the conscription policies of most other countries.
The war’s toll on Ukraine’s manpower is evident. Many of the men who have been conscripted describe the frontlines as a “meat grinder,” a grim reference to the high death toll among soldiers. Families are being torn apart as husbands, brothers, and sons are sent to fight in a war with no clear end in sight.
Yet, despite the bleak outlook, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently stated that Ukraine is “closer to the end of the war” with Russia. While his optimism may offer some hope, the reality on the ground remains dire.
Many of the men in hiding believe that returning to normal life is far from possible. Until the conflict is truly over, they will continue to live in fear of being caught and sent to the frontlines.
The war has also created a divided society in Ukraine. On one hand, there are those who feel a patriotic duty to fight and defend their country against Russian aggression. On the other, there are those who see conscription as a death sentence and are unwilling to sacrifice their lives in a war they believe has already claimed too many. The tension between these two groups has only grown as the war drags on.
As the conflict continues, the fate of these 1.5 million men in hiding remains uncertain. Will they eventually be forced into the military as the war grinds on, or will the tide turn, allowing them to see the light of day once again? For now, they remain part of Ukraine’s “secret army,” doing whatever it takes to avoid the horrors of war.
