This article reports on an incident at the U.S. Capitol where an 18-year-old man approached the building carrying a loaded firearm, was detained by Capitol Police, and is now facing multiple charges. Officials say rapid response by officers prevented injuries, and the suspect’s vehicle contained tactical gear that prompted a broader investigation. The U.S. Capitol Police released details about the arrest and spoke publicly about their preparedness and ongoing inquiry. This account reflects official statements and documented actions from the scene.

Around midday on Tuesday, authorities say a young man carrying a weapon rushed toward the U.S. Capitol and was stopped by officers on the Lower West Terrace. Law enforcement took him into custody at the scene, and there were no reported injuries among officers or bystanders. The quick intervention averted what could have been a dangerous situation close to the center of our national government.

Within minutes, Capitol Police issued updates on their X account and temporarily closed nearby intersections while they secured the area and gathered evidence. The crowd and surrounding streets were disrupted as officials worked to determine whether the incident posed a broader threat. Authorities kept the public informed as they assessed the scene and cleared the perimeter.

Maryland Avenue is temporarily closed between First and Third Streets, SW, while we investigate.

Now, the United States Capitol Police has shared a press release with more information on the suspect and the items recovered at the scene.

The suspect was identified as 18-year-old Carter Camacho from Smyrna, GA, and officers arrested him just after noon on the Lower West Terrace of the Capitol. The release makes clear that the weapon was loaded and that officers found multiple rounds of ammunition. In addition to the firearm, Camacho was wearing a tactical-style vest when he was detained.

Capitol Police also located the suspect’s vehicle, an SUV parked nearby on Maryland Avenue, which contained additional gear that raised concerns. Inside the vehicle they report seeing a helmet and a gas mask, items that prompted investigators to widen their search and examine whether there were further threats. Officials said the presence of that equipment influenced how they processed the scene and what evidence they collected.

The charges listed in the USCP release cover several offenses, including Unlawful Activities, Carrying a Rifle without a License, Unregistered Firearm, and Unregistered Ammunition. Those counts suggest investigators saw this as more than a momentary lapse in judgment and are treating the case seriously under federal law. Legal consequences now await the suspect as prosecutors review the evidence gathered by the Capitol Police.

U.S. Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan addressed reporters during a press conference and noted that investigators had not been made aware of any specific statements by the suspect during the arrest. He said officers were “unaware of any motive at this time” while examining the facts. Sullivan emphasized the importance of training and constant readiness in protecting the Capitol complex.

Sullivan said in a statement:

“Just last summer, we held an active threat exercise on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol – in the very location where today’s officers stopped the suspect,” he said. “These now routine exercises are planned monthly and in different areas of the Capitol Complex to keep our officers ready for potential threats just like this.”

Officials confirmed that the suspect was not previously known to U.S. Capitol Police, which means this did not stem from an ongoing investigation or prior local criminal record held by USCP. Investigators are continuing to piece together the suspect’s movements and whether any affiliations or outside actors played a role. The investigation will include forensic work on the vehicle, the tactical items recovered, and any surveillance or witness accounts from the West Terrace.

Republican-leaning observers and lawmakers are likely to focus on the rapid response and the need for continued vigilance at the Capitol as evidence emerges. The fact that officers acted decisively and prevented casualties will be highlighted as proof that routine preparedness pays off, while questions about how this individual approached the Capitol will drive calls for robust security protocols. Officials are balancing transparency about what happened with the need to protect investigative details.

Authorities stress that, at this point, they have no indication the incident was part of a larger coordinated threat, but they are keeping an open investigation and coordinating with federal partners. As the Capitol remains a high-value target, law enforcement officials are reviewing procedures and evidence to ensure no further risks remain. Follow-up steps will include legal filings, interviews, and a review of training and response actions used during the arrest.
