A suspected attacker identified as Cole Allen traveled from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., and tried to breach security at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner; law enforcement sources say he aimed not only at President Donald Trump but also at administration officials, and investigators found writings and social media content that are now part of a wider probe.

On Sunday, Fox News congressional correspondent Bill Melugin reported, based on law enforcement sources, that Cole Allen attempted to target President Donald Trump and other Trump administration officials. Authorities say Allen was no longer cooperating with investigators after his arrest, and that he had a hotel room at the Washington Hilton on the night of the incident.

Investigators searched Allen’s hotel room and discovered written material that they are reviewing as part of the ongoing investigation. Law enforcement officials told reporters the writings indicate an intent to target administration officials, though they say the notes did not explicitly name the White House Correspondents Association Dinner.

According to public statements from authorities, the suspect tried to rush past a Secret Service checkpoint in an apparent effort to reach the Washington Hilton ballroom while President Trump was scheduled to speak. Secret Service agents reacted quickly, and during the confrontation an agent was shot at but saved by his vest and the rapid response of other officers.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has said that Allen traveled from Los Angeles to Washington via Amtrak and was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and knives when he arrived. Investigators so far believe Allen acted alone, though the probe continues to determine any further connections or motives.

Authorities also report finding anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric on Allen’s social media accounts, which they are reviewing alongside the writings taken from the hotel room. Those findings are driving a focused criminal inquiry into both intent and capability, and they have prompted officials to examine whether broader threats exist to administration personnel.

BREAKING: Investigators found writings in the WHCA suspected shooter’s hotel room and are reviewing the written materials as part of the ongoing investigation, law enforcement and White House officials told @CBSNews.

The suspect’s writings clearly stated he wanted to target administration officials, the sources say.

But the writings didn’t specifically mention the White House Correspondents Association Dinner, I’m told.

Authorities also found anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric on his social media accounts.

This is being treated as a serious attack on officials and on the functioning of the presidency, not merely an isolated act against one individual. Security professionals note that targeting administration staff can be a way to destabilize policy continuity, and that even a single successful attack on a senior official would have far-reaching consequences.

The incident marks the third attempt on President Trump’s life in less than two years, a grim pattern that raises questions about threats to public figures and the effectiveness of current protective measures. With multiple attempts recorded, Republican voices are emphasizing the need for robust law and order responses and accountability for violent actors.

Investigators are piecing together Allen’s movements and motives, examining travel records, communications, and the materials seized at the hotel and elsewhere. Officials have said the suspect was subdued and taken into custody alive in the Washington Hilton lobby, and that he shot at a Secret Service agent during the altercation.

As the federal inquiry continues, sources close to the investigation are reviewing the writings and social posts for any links to extremist networks or lone-actor radicalization. Law enforcement officials have promised to pursue all leads and to coordinate with local and federal partners to ensure the safety of elected and appointed officials.

Republican leaders and commentators have responded by stressing law and order and the need to protect the chain of command within the administration. They argue that the focus should remain on swift justice for violent actors and on shoring up security at public events where high-profile officials will appear.

The investigation remains active and evolving, with federal agents conducting interviews, analyzing evidence, and assessing whether any accomplices or further threats exist. For now, officials underscore that quick action by protective forces prevented a worse outcome and that the judicial process will determine the suspect’s fate.
