Denver officials are considering a controversial proposal to convert a vacant elementary school into an emergency shelter for undocumented migrants, sparking debate across the city. The plan, which is still in its early stages, comes as Denver continues to face pressure from a growing influx of migrants. According to a spokesperson for Democratic Mayor Mike Johnston’s office, the vacant building has been identified as a potential shelter, but no final decisions have been made.

“The building has been identified as a potential migrant shelter, but nothing is final and there’s no paperwork,” the mayor’s spokesperson told Fox News. “We’ve been actively searching for suitable buildings that can serve as emergency shelters to address the growing need.”

The vacant school in question is owned by Denver Public Schools (DPS). However, DPS has yet to make a formal decision regarding the building’s use. “No determination has been made yet,” a DPS spokesperson told Fox News, emphasizing that discussions are still ongoing and that community input will likely play a key role in the final decision.

Denver has faced challenges in the past as a result of embracing sanctuary city status. In January 2024, NBC News reported that nearly 40,000 migrants arrived in Denver in just the span of a year.

A grim statistic when considering the city’s population is just over 710,000, making it the top destination per capita of newly arrived illegals crossing the U.S. southern border and traveling north by bus. Denver has struggled economically from the influx of illegals. In April, Democrat mayor Mike Johnston announced that funding to the city’s police department would be slashed by $8 million in order to take care of illegals.

This latest news shows once again how sanctuary cities are a disaster and a drain on public resources.

The proposal comes as Denver, like many cities across the U.S., struggles to manage the surge of migrants who have arrived in recent months. While the city has implemented various programs and shelters to provide temporary housing, the influx has strained resources, prompting officials to explore new solutions, such as repurposing vacant public buildings like schools.

Mayor Johnston, who has prioritized addressing the migrant crisis, has emphasized the need for emergency shelters to prevent overcrowding in the city’s current housing facilities. However, the idea of using a school building has sparked concern among residents and local officials.

Some community members have expressed concerns about the long-term implications of converting a school into a migrant shelter. Critics argue that the vacant building should remain available for educational purposes, especially as the city’s population continues to grow. Others worry about the potential impact on nearby neighborhoods.

“We need to ensure that any decision made serves the best interests of the community as a whole,” said Mark Sullivan, a local resident. “While we understand the need for emergency shelters, we also need to think about the future of our schools and neighborhoods.”

Supporters of the plan, however, argue that repurposing vacant buildings for humanitarian efforts is a practical and compassionate solution. They point out that the elementary school building has been vacant for some time and that the city needs to find immediate ways to house migrants who have few other options.

“This is an emergency situation, and we need to use all available resources,” said Linda Flores, an advocate for migrant rights. “These people need shelter, and if a vacant school can provide that, it’s a step in the right direction.”

The proposal is part of a broader effort by the city of Denver to address the ongoing migrant crisis. Mayor Johnston has committed to working with local organizations, federal agencies, and neighboring states to find long-term solutions to support migrants while balancing the needs of Denver’s residents.

While the final decision on whether the vacant school will be repurposed as a shelter has yet to be made, city officials are expected to continue discussions in the coming weeks. Denver Public Schools and the mayor’s office have both signaled that community engagement will be an important part of the process moving forward.

“We are taking a measured approach and making sure all voices are heard,” the DPS spokesperson said. “Ultimately, our goal is to find a solution that benefits everyone.”

As the situation develops, Denver residents are paying close attention to the city’s actions, knowing that the outcome could set a precedent for how other cities handle similar challenges in the future.

  • Here is a sensible idea which isn’t new but the proper thing to absolutely do! Ship them all to the Denver airport and give them one way tickets to fly back to their actual countries they came from; End of Story!

These “insane leftists and liberal morons” have to stop playing these games of “encouraging illegal immigration” thinking only about the “Democrat votes” they can gain but “not the reality that America can’t be a dumping ground for the world’s problems.” These same “Blue Sanctuary promoting Democrats” were the one’s pushing the “Covid Lock-down mandates” with an “Iron Fist like a Dictatorship along with requiring the Jabs” saying they had to do it to control the disease which Fauci and the CCP intentionally created! Then they said to keep us Americans safe which wasn’t their actual concern, we really don’t matter to them at all; they went about destroying our economy and many middle class lives with businesses; so very Soros-esk! But look how they switched around on a dime to have our nation invaded by so many illegals that are totally unvetted and actually unknowns in so many dangerous ways! Some safe and reliable estimates like by Tucker Carlson of this reality say the number is in the ballpark of 15 million to as much as 20 million, from some 150 nations; and guess how many diseases many of these people have brought with them, some even like “incurable Tuberculosis!”

The real issue is what to do with the Democrat Party that is a true enemy of America and is destroying it along with the Citizens, “We the People;” they are like a cancer or plague on our Nation!
