A Chicago Transit Authority janitor was stabbed to death outside a Chicago train station Thursday, and the man charged in his killing was on electronic monitoring with a history of probation violations at the time of the attack, authorities said.

Julian Mobley, 41, a husband and father, was killed just before 3 p.m. at the Damen Green Line station, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Chevazz Campbell, 37, is accused of stabbing Mobley in the neck after the two argued when Campbell allegedly entered the station through the gate without paying.

Before the stabbing, prosecutors said Campbell sprayed Mobley in the face with mace twice, according to FOX 32. Chicago Police confirmed to Fox News Digital that Campbell also allegedly robbed Mobley and was arrested hours after the attack.

Authorities said Campbell was on electronic monitoring at the time and had at least four probation violations filed against him for curfew violations, FOX 32 reported.

The case is likely to draw renewed scrutiny to Cook County’s use of electronic monitoring as an alternative to pretrial detention, a program that has faced criticism amid reports that a significant share of defendants on ankle monitors in Chicago have gone AWOL.

Campbell faces charges including first-degree murder, armed robbery and felon in possession of a weapon.

Union and city respond

The Amalgamated Transit Union issued a statement honoring Mobley: “ATU Local 308 Brother Julian Mobley, a CTA Janitor, was tragically killed while trying to stop an attack on a fellow member over a fare dispute. He died a hero.”

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement, “My administration remains committed to doing everything in our power to ensure safety on the CTA for its commuters and its committed employees who make public transit possible.”
