General Mills and Ziploc have introduced a resealable bag inside Cheerios boxes, responding to years of consumer complaints about stale cereal and makeshift clips, starting with a Walmart exclusive before a wider national rollout.

General Mills is changing the packaging on one of America’s best-known cereals after years of consumers complaining about stale, hard-to-close bags. The company has partnered with Ziploc to launch Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal, a resealable bag built into the traditional box.

The new design opens only partway across the top, creating a pour spout. Consumers can then reseal that opening, rather than rolling the bag down or reaching for a clip or clothespin.

General Mills says the move is a direct response to years of customer feedback. The company reports that Cheerios and Ziploc together receive hundreds of thousands of requests, comments and reactions every year specifically about cereal packaging.

The frustration shows up in data, too. A December 2025 survey from consumer insights platform Suzy found that 90% of cereal eaters take extra steps after opening a box to keep the contents fresh, whether that’s clips, clothespins or transferring cereal into separate containers.

“Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal takes a small, everyday cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they’ve been asking for,” said Emilie Knox, vice president and business unit director for Cheerios at General Mills.

The complaints have been visible on social media for years. A 2024 Reddit post asking “Why don’t cereal companies use Ziploc type bags?” drew hundreds of upvotes, and another Reddit user wrote earlier this year that “they could of did this 30 years ago. People have been asking for ages.” On X, one person reacted to the news by saying “Cheerios just solved one of the biggest childhood problems.”

The PantrySeal closure is not an ordinary Ziploc bag. Its zipper stops partway across the top, leaving a gap intended to make pouring easier and cut down on spills.

For now, the new packaging is limited to original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios, and it is being offered as an additional option rather than a full replacement for the standard bag. It became available exclusively at Walmart starting Oct. 27, with a wider national retail rollout expected in the coming months.
