Ella Langley, the Alabama native behind country music’s longest-running No. 1 song by a female artist, appears to have responded to Doja Cat after the pop star said she had no idea who Langley was.
Langley’s hit “Choosin’ Texas” has now spent 19 weeks atop Billboard’s Hot 100, setting the record for the longest run at No. 1 by a female country artist in history.
The controversy started when Doja Cat appeared on the “Sundae Conversation” podcast and was asked whether she was a fan of Langley. “I don’t know what that is,” Doja Cat replied, sounding out Langley’s name a few times. When podcast hosts urged her to give the singer a listen, telling her she’d likely enjoy the music, Doja Cat simply said, “OK.”
Reaction to the exchange split online, with some listeners crediting Doja Cat for an honest answer and others accusing her of playing coy about a chart-topping artist.
Doja Cat revisited the topic days later during an Instagram Live session on Aug. 25, according to E! News. She made clear that country music generally isn’t her taste, though she carved out an exception for one older track. “I like that one Keith Urban song from 2004,” she said, adding that Langley is “probably a fine lady” whose music simply doesn’t speak to her.
During the same livestream, Doja Cat played “Choosin’ Texas” and reacted in real time. “This is not my vibe, but she has a very pretty voice,” she said, later adding, “I don’t like it, but that’s fine.” She also gave the song some credit for its hook. “It’s very earwormy it sounds like, it’s like [a] catchy melody. I get it, and she’s pretty.”

Langley’s Response
Langley posted a carousel of new photos and videos on social media this week with a caption that fans quickly connected to Doja Cat’s remarks: “Ella Langley? What is that?”
The post drew a wave of comments from fans reading it as a direct response to the pop star’s earlier comments. “We all know… Doja just wants to Be Her,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “Messy with that caption it’s what I’m here for.”
Other commenters pushed back in Doja Cat’s defense, pointing to her own career achievements. Doja Cat has racked up billions of streams and multiple multi-platinum releases, and in 2022 she and SZA won the Grammy for best pop duo/group performance for “Kiss Me More,” among other nominations.
Meanwhile, back home in Alabama, Langley’s record-setting run continues to draw national attention, and her caption suggests she’s taking the online sparring in stride while her hit keeps climbing further into the history books.
