George Clooney is headlining a last-minute fundraising event in New York City aimed at boosting two political nonprofits that work to elect Democrats to state legislatures, just days before the 2026 midterm elections.

The event, set for November 1, centers on a table reading of “Smear,” a political comedy written by actor Clark Gregg, best known for his roles in Marvel superhero films. The play follows a fictional North Carolina legislative race that could help decide which party controls power in Washington.

Joining Clooney and Gregg for the reading will be actors Laverne Cox, Adam Scott, Glenn Fleshler, Betty Gilpin, and Shane Paul McGhie.

Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit The States Project and The States Forum, two nonprofit groups that work to elect Democratic candidates and advance Democratic Party policies in state legislatures. Both organizations were founded by Daniel Squadron, a former Democratic New York state senator who previously served as a Senate aide to Sen. Chuck Schumer. Squadron co-founded the groups with Adam Pritzker, a member of Illinois Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker’s family, and Columbia University economist Jeffrey Sachs.

Playwright Cites Cold War-Era Disinformation Theory

In an interview with Deadline, Gregg described a theme explored in the play involving Yuri Bezmenov, a former KGB officer who defected decades ago and spoke about Soviet strategies for destabilizing Western societies through disinformation rather than direct confrontation.

“Something they talk about in the play, which is weird, is that there was this guy (Yuri) Besmanov, who was this KGB guy who defected 25 years ago, 40 years ago, and he said, ‘We’re not trying to take over your country. We’re just going to spread disinformation until no one knows what’s true, and then they’ll all hate each other,'” Gregg told Deadline. “Then you throw in AI that ramps that up to light speed, and the darkness has a whole bunch of terrifying tools now.”

Groups Focus on State-Level Power

Squadron emphasized the stakes of state legislative races in a statement about the fundraiser.

“State legislatures hold tremendous power over the most important issues in our country and our democracy itself,” Squadron said. “When it comes to the integrity of our elections, making ends meet, individual rights and more, the decisions that impact Americans’ lives for the next few years all depend on ideas coming from states.”

The event comes as both major parties ramp up spending and star-powered outreach in the final stretch before the midterm elections.
