For the majority of the United States, this summer has been blisteringly hot.

Summers in the South are generally hot and humid, but this summer has been the hottest I’ve experienced in my whole time here, with more days than ever before in the 90s. It’s just been consistently hot.

To lessen the load on the power grid, some local governments around the nation have given orders telling citizens not to lower their thermostats below a specific temperature. So instead of running the air on 74 degrees, they may ask you to set it at 80.

For others, however, they didn’t ask them to change their thermostat in order to ease the load, they forced them to do it. Residents in Colorado were shocked to discover that the company had actually prevented them from controlling the temperature in their homes.

The Denver Channel reported,

During the dog days of summer, it’s important to keep your home cool. But when thousands of Xcel customers in Colorado tried adjusting their thermostats Tuesday, they learned they had no control over the temperatures in their own homes.

Temperatures climbed into the 90s Tuesday, which is why Tony Talarico tried to crank up the air conditioning in his partner’s Arvada home.

“I mean, it was 90 out, and it was right during the peak period,” Talarico said. “It was hot.”

That’s when he saw a message on the thermostat stating the temperature was locked due to an “energy emergency.”

Thousands of Xcel customers locked out of thermostats during ‘energy emergency’

On social media, dozens of Xcel customers complained of similar experiences — some reporting home temperatures as high as 88 degrees.

Once again, this proves that this rush to clean energy isn’t going to cut it. If they want to do something to ease the pain, they should buy all home owners a solar panel setup and let them help contribute to easing the use of fossil fuels. This won’t fix the problem, but it would help a lot.

  • That’s EXACTLY why you don’t install a “smart” thermostat! Get the old fashioned “dumb” kind, set where YOU want it and Fk the grid. Commiefornia want’s you to buy an electric car, but don’t charge it. Countries are restricting electricity to heat their homes so people are burning wood against WHAT’S that doing for the climate (it ain’t good) chopping down trees that clean the air and putting up smoke and soot. Next come’s using candles for light. Instant jerk back to 19th century? Water is next.

  • As usual, sensationalized headlines without supporting evidence. For many years living in the deep south with 100% humidity and high 90s temperatures I participated in a energy savings program that allowed the utility company to control the thermostat in emergency situations on a rolling basis. This was in exchange for a monthly credit on my bill. Most times the cycling of the compressor only lasted a few minutes for each customer. No one died because of 80 degree temperatures.
