American cyclist Quinn Simmons was suspended by the Trek-Segafredo team on Thursday after posting his personal point of view in comments on social media in support of President Donald Trump.

In response to a reporter from another country, Simmons posted the following tweet:

The 2019 junior road race world champion replied to a journalist from the Netherlands who had criticized Trump on Twitter.

“Regrettably, team rider Quinn Simmons made statements online that we feel are divisive, incendiary, and detrimental to the team, professional cycling, its fans, and the positive future we hope to help create for the sport,” Trek-Segafredo said in a statement. “(He) will not be racing for Trek-Segafredo until further notice.”

Another poster jumped in and on Simmons and he reposnded with an American Flag.

The response on Twitter and Facebook to the company was anger at the company. Trek-Segafredo is a company registered in the United States, Belgium and Portugal.

Trek is the same company who sued Greg LeMond for talking about the problems with dopping, that cost him his star status and his livelihood.

“Greg’s public comments damaged the LeMond brand, and our reputation with retailers and consumers,” Trek’s representatives said about LeMond in 2008.

Trek is best known among cyclists for making the bikes that Lance Armstrong rode in his Tour de France victories. With brands like Trek, Gary Fisher and Klein, the company sells 1.5 million bikes a year and does $700 million in sales.

The LeMond brand has about $15 million in sales per year, a company representative said at the time the company trashed the bike’s namesake.

In response to the suspension, Been, the original reporter who posted the jab about Trump, wrote that she felt “horrible” about it and that she wouldn’t have wanted Simmons to be suspended.

Simmons was in his first season with the Trek-Segafredo.
