38-year-old Councilwoman Susan Zhuang has been taken into custody for various charges stemming from the incident, such as second-degree assault, third-degree assault, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, unlawful assembly, second-degree harassment, and two counts of disorderly conduct.
The altercation took place during a protest called “Residents Against Homeless Shelters” in Gravesend on Wednesday.
The demonstrators were expressing their opposition to the noise generated by the construction of a proposed shelter intended to accommodate 150 homeless men.
The New York Post reports:
Zhuang, 38, allegedly tried to prevent officers from arresting another woman at the protest grabbing and pushing police barricades into cops — then bit Deputy Chief of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South Frank DiGiacomo on the arm when he attempted to pull the councilwoman away from the barriers, law enforcement sources said.
Police confirmed on the phone to The Post that “multiple officers were assaulted” in the Wednesday morning demonstration and that several other demonstrators were also taken into custody.
Footage of Zhuang’s arrest shows the lawmaker cable-tied to a barricade while screaming incoherently as police attempt to take her into custody.
DiGiacomo’s arm was marked with cuts and tooth imprints after being bitten, requiring the officer to receive an “anti-viral cocktail” and a tetanus shot for treatment.
Zhuang is set to make a court appearance on October 15.
Sarah Krissoff, the attorney for the councilwoman, informed the media outside the courthouse that she anticipates the charges will not hold.
“I’m confident that once the facts and circumstances come out about what happened this morning, the case will not proceed,” Krissoff said outside the courtroom. “We will wait for that process to unfold and do not want to get into the facts at this time.”
“A lot of times during the course of arrests things happen,” Krissoff said of the allegation. “An attack on a police officer constitutes a felony charge and it’s charged as a felony. But I expect that the case will not proceed as charged.”
Krissoff claimed that Zhuang was injured during the scuffle.
“During the course of the event, she was injured,” Krissoff said. “She has back pain and bruises on her legs, her arms and on her wrists.”
Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, who attended the arraignment, also defended Zhuang by claiming that she had been attacked while helping an elderly woman.
“From the video, you will see that she was attacked,” Hermelyn said, according to the Post’s report. “They grabbed her, choked her. And we don’t know who. We are not making allegations… When you’re in the midst of all of that, things happen.”

Lawrence, you mentioned one important thing that I remember reading about and watching on T.V. I can see where this is going. Not only will this bitch be set free, she will counter charge the police for hurting her and she will become the victim. And with DA Alvin Bragg on the case she will most definately be set free. There is NO consequence for crime in New York. Criminals rule.
Leon Redbone; yes it is sickening to see how so many these days manipulate the system and play “victim” while a corrupted system “allows it” so just “a sign of the sick times” we are living in! Rule of law what’s that? We will all see eventually, because anyone with ample sense in their head knows that “God Almighty has the final say in everything!” Now that is too serious to ignore; so people better, “get their acts together!”
Michael; Yes it’s hard to understand how so many horrible atrocities committed back in WWII and throughout the past 100 years that for some are totally either “forgotten or ignored outright” by many of these horrible people running around in our government and society at large! To me it’s like they would have to be either brain dead zombies not in control of their own minds or they’re totally immoral cretin devils, but no matter what the case may be its speaks volumes about how sad this current generation of humans is with respect to “facing the Truth” so that people “rise above sin, death and destruction;” yet in this time period where there’s so much access to information and knowledge at their fingertips but in spite of that somehow it’s gotten more like so many people now inviting the conflict, hate and destruction as though it were a holiday that they look forward to, this is madness!
What Mengele did, if that isn’t the most evil satanic, absolutely inhuman atrocity by a man upon other persons which defies any sense of morality and human decency that absolutely deserves the severest punishment that God can mete-out to a soul and its forever.
Matthew 25:46 “These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Revelation 20:10 “And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
2 Thessalonians 1:9 “These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,”
Matthew 25:41“Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;”
Yet those that throw themselves into such condemnation and actual eternal torment must either think God won’t give them what they deserve or they love evil so much and inflicting it upon others that somehow they are willing to do this to themselves not caring about consequences, and what they will get is so beyond actual contemplation or our capacity to really see it for what it is while we are in this state of existence. The only thing I can say to put it into something tangible is what serial killers do and how they may derive a sense of power that envelops their egos like some powerful narcotic that addicts keep shooting up each time to get that high that gets more difficult to achieve, so they use more and more like some vicious cycle that feeds into itself!
This reminds me of something former television producer/host John Walsh of America’s Most Wanted said about serial killers when he was having a discussion with Monsignor Jim Lisante of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Massapequa Park, New York about serial killers and the death penalty! John said how he had gotten to interview many such killers and how with them in many cases there is no really getting an true understanding of what they are about or why they do such things (I say that it’s diabolical Evil is all we can actually know about it, that it’s; pure evil) and he thinks that spending all kinds of time and resources to figure them out is a waste because we can’t and that it’s better to “send them on to the next level for God to deal with them.” As we know John’s own boy Adam was brutally tortured and murdered by such a monster which is why I decided after watching that program that I don’t want to know anything more about them either, and I agree with John Walsh 100%. Even the Monsignor was nodding in agreement in that discussion. So actually this points to, exactly what you said about “Mengele the Angel of Death,” “I can’t imagine the mindset of anyone doing those experiments on any human being.” That is why I thought immediately about that discussion I saw years ago and I’m sure you and John Walsh would understand each other perfectly.
But now you inspired me to think about something I thought I had resolved pretty well and recognize that I needed more clarification on this very subject of understanding such hate like you bring up regarding the “DC Squad” women who have such hate and then how the peoples and ideologies be they Islamic or Marxist that they come from have demonstrated that hate quite graphically so many times. So I went looking for some further understanding and there is quite a lot out there but this explanation coincides with what I thought right along and actually remember in depicted accurately in the Mel Gibson film “The Passion of The Christ,” how it was brought out very well in various scenes. Here is some of the source I found of insight that describes well what happened and why. Much of this I know you’re aware of being a Christian but we all tend to leave bits of important facts out in our own contemplation on this subject at times thinking we have it figured out.
“Jesus of Nazareth, charged by the Roman authorities with sedition, dies on a Roman cross. But Jews — the collective, all Jews — become known as “Christ-killers”. Still haunting, the legacy of that charge becomes acute during Holy Week, when pastors and priests who speak about the death of Jesus have to talk about “the Jews”. Every year, the same difficulty surfaces: how can a gospel of love be proclaimed, if that same gospel is heard to promote hatred of Jesus’s own people?
The charge against “the Jews” permeates the pages of the New Testament. In the gospel of Matthew, Pilate literally washes his hands while “all the people” — all the Jewish people — clamour for Jesus’s death: “Let him be crucified … His blood be on us and on our children!” (Matthew 27:23, 27). John’s gospel identifies the Jews as “from your father the devil” (John 8:44) and blames them for backing Pilate into a corner and forcing him to kill an innocent man.
In the Acts of the Apostles, Peter charges “the entire house of Israel” (Acts 2:36) with crucifying Jesus and so having “killed the author of life” (Acts 3:14-15). Paul then bluntly refers to “the Jews, who killed the Lord Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 2:14-15).
Perhaps this vilification was inevitable. Jesus’s followers could not understand how the vast majority of Jews could not accept their belief in him as the Messiah. The majority of Jews, in turn, saw no sign of the Messianic age having dawned: no general resurrection of the dead; no ingathering of the exiles to Zion; no end to death, war, disease or poverty. What was self-evident to one group was incomprehensible to the other. Incomprehension turned to mistrust, and mistrust, on both sides, turned to vilification.
Today, interfaith conversation, in which Jews and Christians learn to appreciate their common roots and better understand the reasons for the gradual and often painful separation, can reverse the process. Official (and unofficial) church statements facilitate healing as well: Nostra Aetate , the 1965 declaration of Vatican II, proclaimed that all Jews at all times should not be held responsible for Jesus’s death, and pope emeritus Benedict XVI, in the second volume of his Jesus of Nazareth, strongly reiterated the point. Christians from many (but not all) other branches of the tradition, generally agree.
But we still have to deal with our pasts, and with our Scriptures. Every time the Passion narratives are read, the threat of anti-Judaism reappears. There is no catch-all for resolving the problems in the New Testament — or in Tanakh/the Old Testament, for that matter; we all have difficult texts in our canons.
