Court records reveal that Devon Archer, formerly in business with Hunter Biden, has been cooperating in an unusual murder-for-hire scheme separate from the impeachment investigation related to alleged Biden family corruption.
Archer’s legal team has used his cooperation in the murder-for-hire case and the impeachment inquiry to postpone his sentencing for a securities fraud conviction in 2018. U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams approved Archer’s request to delay the sentencing and set a hearing date for November 8, 2024.
“The primary reason for this request is to allow Mr. Archer to complete his ongoing cooperation with Congressional and Department of Justice investigations, and to allow the Court to have all relevant information about that cooperation at sentencing,” defense lawyer Matthew Schwartz wrote.
Court documents show that Archer is also acting as a witness in a separate Vermont case involving a murder-for-hire plot and fraud.
According to the Justice Department, two defendants, Serhat Gumrukcu and Berk Eratay, were charged with wire fraud related to the murder-for-hire scheme and the kidnapping and death of Gregory Davis in January 2018.
Archer’s lawyer informed the judge that he is cooperating with investigators as a victim of one defendant’s fraud but is not involved in the criminal conduct of that case.
Archer’s testimony was crucial in the House Oversight Committee’s impeachment investigation into President Joe Biden. Court filings indicate his continued cooperation with the committee’s inquiry.
In 2018, Archer was convicted of securities fraud and conspiracy to commit securities fraud for his involvement in a tribal bonds scheme linked to Hunter Biden’s associates, though Hunter Biden himself was not implicated.
Another defendant later revealed that their fraudulent scheme was intended to raise funds for a hedge fund involving Hunter Biden, with evidence suggesting his close association with Burnham Asset Management.
Archer was sentenced to one year and one day in prison in February 2022, but after an appeal, a resentencing was ordered due to incorrect guidelines.
His lawyer stated that he continues to provide documents to House committees and is expected to testify in open hearings before them in the coming weeks.
As of July 16, no specific date had been set for his testimony, and no hearings have occurred since then.
“It is unclear if President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek reelection just days after Archer’s letter had or will have any effect on the ongoing investigation,” Just the News added.
Archer testified last year to the committee that he saw his former business partner, Hunter Biden, as a “lobbyist” who leveraged his influential name to secure lucrative deals with foreign oligarchs and companies.
This involved dealings with a Ukrainian energy company, Burisma, seeking protection from legal issues and corruption investigations.
In a transcribed interview with the Oversight Committee in July 2023, Archer stated that Joe Biden, while serving as vice president, had assisted his son in building a family “brand” that attracted foreign clients looking for influence in Washington.
The report indicated that this value sometimes included the current president attending dinners or engaging in phone conversations with clients from China, Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.
