An older Chicago Cubs fan had apparently seen enough disrespect during the playing of the National Anthem at a recent game at Wrigley Field. And a viral video of him popping a younger man on the back of the head for staying seated is now dividing the internet.

The clip, which appears to have been captured before Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Twins, shows the older gentleman in full Cubs gear leaning in and confronting the fan in front of him.

When the younger man remains seated, the older fan reaches back and delivers a smack to the back of his head.

A post on Instagram indicates that the older guy told his younger counterpart to “stand up or get smacked,” and eventually “made good on his promise.”

Some online observers suggested that you can’t argue with the results, as the younger fan promptly stood up at attention for the remainder of the song.

“Doing the parenting the kid’s father didn’t bother with,” one fan on X.

“It looks like no one standing around had a problem with this love tap reminding the dude, in case he forgot to show respect for our country,” another .

“When this older generation dies off, we are going to be all out of legends,” another post .

Still, some fans weren’t so sure about the discipline, especially if the young man was not related.

One person sarcastically , “Violating someone’s First Amendment right while also assaulting them in the name of patriotism.”

“The guy is free to sit during the national anthem. That is his right by law,” an X reader . “But he is not free of the consequences the market may impose on him for doing so.”

Unfortunately, whatever side you’re on in this debate, one thing is clear. Focus has clearly been taken off the National Anthem itself and placed on these two individuals. Which is a problem. The video has circulated nearly 10 million times.

Maybe smack him upside the head after they shout “Play ball!” instead.

The Chicago police, according to TMZ, are aware of the incident but say nobody has filed a report yet. The Cubs have not commented on the situation, but what do you think will happen here? If the team takes any action, the guy doing the smacking is going to be banned from the ballpark.

Wrigley doesn’t need fewer patriots and more disrespectful jackwagons in their seats.

While we await word on that, let’s all take a moment to appreciate this other display of patriotism involving the Chicago Cubs.

In 1976, during a game at Dodger Stadium, Cubs outfielder Rick Monday sprinted across the field and snatched an American flag from two protesters who were attempting to burn it in the outfield grass.

“If you’re going to burn the flag, don’t do it around me. I’ve been to too many veterans’ hospitals and seen too many broken bodies of guys who tried to protect it,” Monday said after his heroic act.

Monday earned a standing ovation from the Dodger faithful. Does this man deserve the same reaction from fans?

  • If I was seated nearby and that unpatriotic dude didn’t stand up after that love-tap I would be likely to give him a swift kick in the ass as I helped him stand!
