The story lays out a disturbing case where a Gulf War veteran, moved into a New York state veterans home, was secretly recorded being abused by an aide, and the fallout has exposed failures across the system—from staffing and oversight to how federal and state agencies respond to veterans in need.

Videos often go viral for upbeat reasons, but this one spread because it captures cruelty toward a defenseless veteran with Alzheimer’s. The footage prompted outrage from fellow veterans, family members, and the public, who are demanding accountability for what happened. The central figure is Albert O’Toole, a Gulf War veteran whose wife installed a hidden camera after noticing changes in his condition.

Angela Sangro says O’Toole declined after being moved from a federal veterans facility to a state-run home on the same campus, and she regrets that decision. “That was the biggest mistake that I made was moving him,” Sangro said. She noticed bruises, heavy sedation, and unexplained injuries that prompted her to act and capture the truth on video.

The footage shows O’Toole being handled roughly by an aide identified in local reports as Matthew Cox, with scenes that include food forcibly taken from his hands and the aide grabbing him by the neck. The video escalates from rough handling to clear physical assault, and at times O’Toole can be heard crying out in pain. The images are hard to watch and raise urgent questions about supervision and safety at the facility.

O’Toole served in the Gulf War, where Sangro says an explosion left him with a traumatic brain injury. Years later, he received a devastating Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

She made the difficult decision to place him in the VA as his condition worsened.

Sangro says that at first, O’Toole was thriving at the federal facility in Montrose. But after he was moved across campus to the state-run veterans home, she says everything changed.

Sangro describes what the camera captured: an aide yanks food away, then “He picks him up by his neck and throws him in the chair. And then he forcefully pulls him into the chair and punches him in the side of the face or the neck.” The sequence in the video appears to show a broom being used against O’Toole and staff failing to intervene while he was in distress.

The video, now being shown publicly for the first time, begins with O’Toole’s longtime aide yanking food out of his hands.

Sangro describes what seems to happen seconds later on the video.

“He picks him up by his neck and throws him in the chair. And then he forcefully pulls him into the chair and punches him in the side of the face or the neck,” she says.

Moments later, the video appears to show the aide striking O’Toole in the head with a broom, before forcing him back into a restraint chair.

At one point on the video, O’Toole can be heard crying out in pain.

“You hear him screaming and nobody comes to check on him. Where are the other aides?” Sangro asked. She says she visited nightly and still missed the abuse, which underlines how determined abusers can be when oversight is weak. Families expect veterans homes to be safe places, not spots where survivors are re-traumatized by the very people assigned to care for them.

State officials fired the aide after the footage circulated and an arrest followed, yet reports indicate the individual remained employed by the federal agency in a non-patient role while investigations continued. That status raised fury among veterans and lawmakers because it suggests federal protections and bureaucracy can shelter employees even after serious allegations.

When fellow veterans saw the video, they erupted on social platforms, calling the incident “a disgrace” and demanding swift action. Their posts highlighted a larger complaint: veterans often fight long battles just to secure benefits and respectful care, and when abuse surfaces the response can be slow or inadequate. The anger centers on broken promises to those who served.

One widely shared post laying out the outrage said, in part, “This is a disgrace.” It went on to describe O’Toole’s service and injuries, the actions caught on camera, and how the accused remained on federal payroll while the case moved forward. The message bluntly demanded immediate removal and accountability from officials overseeing veterans’ programs.

The pressure pushed federal leadership to respond publicly, and VA officials announced steps to begin removal proceedings against the employee while noting the abuse occurred at a state-run facility. That statement aimed to show movement, but for families and veterans it felt like a reactive, not proactive, fix.

O’Toole’s wife remains worried about other residents at the home and wants families to be alerted to potential dangers. “I think people need to hear about it because they need to make sure that their veterans are OK in that home,” she says. The case shines a harsh light on how political will, oversight, and swift enforcement matter when veterans’ safety is at stake.

Public outrage continues as authorities investigate, and the episode is a reminder that the safety and dignity of veterans require constant vigilance from state and federal officials alike.

  • Our country went to sh-t when democrats were in control Obama and Biden are a disgrace to America and only care about control and power. They have done nothing for the American citizens and all they care about are all the illegals who they want them to vote for them. We need the Democrat party totally removed from our government immediately they have no respect for born American citizens who pay their outrageous salaries and keep wasting and stealing taxpayers money only to make themselves rich. How is it every democrat became a multimillionaire on a government salary all under a democrat leadership. It’s time to take our government and country back.

  • This is absolutely a most heinous and totally sickening example of how corrupt and wicked the American Political/Judicial System has become; and in the end, all those on the wrong side of all this evil are going to pay the piper, when they face God Almighty!

I remember in the past and through many of my family-tree service members and nursing professionals, how there was a time when Veterans were always treated with honor, dignity and great respect for their Sacrifice and love of Country and it’s Citizens!

If our Judicial System and “Powers that Be” don’t “Serve Justice” all the way to the wall on this; then we can kiss this country Goodbye!!!

The Criminal Illegal Invaders and Human Traffickers have often times been given free passes for their criminal acts and “treated with Kid-Gloves,” and this is what is being done to Veterans!!!

If I were one of the top brass in the “Powers that Be” I would make sure they pay the “FULL MONTY” and send the message to all out there in the “Public at Large,” that you better not ever do this to any Veteran!!!

God help us!!! In Jesus’ name I pray!

    • I’m sure you all have heard this already out there in the social media circus by others! I am so Pissed-Off!

  • This scumbag needs to be terminated asap and this home should stop receiving federal funds until they clean house and remove the problems. It is unacceptable and 100% unAmerican to abuse ANY vet regardless of medical condition. This cox clown needs to go to jail and then abused by the inmates!!!! Being a vet I am sickened by this abuse!!! Politicians need to step up in this area and use all means to stop this ASAP
