Documents show the FBI collected derogatory information from at least 14 confidential human sources about Joe and Hunter Biden, including allegations tied to Burisma and Ukraine. Those sources provided material over a period of years, and the files now released suggest parts of that material were reviewed and reclassified under the Round River effort. The sheer number of sources and the age of some reporting make the scope of the operation hard to dismiss as routine bureaucratic housekeeping.
According to the new material, Round River was set up to treat Biden-related claims as potential foreign influence, and agents flagged certain reporting as Russian disinformation rather than assessing the underlying facts. That approach reversed the way some other high-profile FBI efforts were run, and it created a situation where reporting from confidential sources was effectively discounted without a thorough truth-finding exercise. Observers are alarmed because national security judgments were being applied to politically combustible material instead of straightforward investigative work.
The documents indicate the operation also identified prominent conservatives and investigators as potential “conduits” of disinformation, a label that included former officials and journalists who raised questions about the Bidens. Names mentioned as conduits included senior figures and lawmakers who were publicly pushing investigations into the family’s business dealings. Labeling critics as conduits of foreign influence has obvious political and reputational consequences for those individuals.
At the same time, the records reportedly classified leading Democrats, including members of the Biden family and several high-profile political figures, as “victimized targets” of the alleged Russian narrative. That categorization cast the people raising concerns into two opposite buckets: alleged victims and supposed transmitters. The binary framing simplified a complex web of allegations and sources into categories that benefited one political narrative while undermining another.
One of the most striking details in the release is that FBI analysts went into their own informant files and marked intelligence as Russian disinformation, even though an intelligence community review later found the team didn’t perform a rigorous inquiry into the veracity of the Ukraine-related allegations. That admission, spelled out in the material, raises the prospect that significant evidence collected by confidential sources was dismissed on procedural or ideological grounds rather than evaluated on its merits. For many, that undermines confidence in how counterintelligence operations intersect with politically sensitive investigations.
The Round River team, per the documents, was dismantled after the revelations, and an internal probe has been launched into the conduct of the operation. Public reporting indicates officials involved in dismantling the effort are considering releasing the underlying evidence provided by the confidential sources. If released, those original source reports could clarify whether the reclassification as disinformation was justified or whether it suppressed actionable leads.
Journalist John Solomon announced the document release and provided a thread that walks through the key revelations, and the records include internal language framing the operation as a counterpart to prior Russia-focused investigations. The narrative in the documents positions Round River as a mirror of earlier probes, swapping targets and conduits between political camps. The counterintelligence operation was codenamed Round River and it divided the characters of the Biden Ukraine scandal into two categories.
The first category were Democrats like Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, George Soros and others who were labeled victimized “targets” of Russian disinformation.
The second category involved conservatives like Bill Barr, Mike Pompeo, Chuck Grassley, Ron Johnson, Jim Jordan, Fox News, Greg Jarrett and myself who were exposing Hunter Biden‘s relationship with the corrupt Burisma energy company. We were branded “conduits” of Russian disinformation.
Round River was essentially the reverse mirror operation to Crossfire Hurricane. After investigating for three years disproven, Democrat allegations of Russia collusion, the FBI flipped to discrediting significant evidence from its own informants about alleged Biden family corruption.
