Although King Charles III’s reign has only just begun, he has already accomplished much.
As someone who has never held the position of King, I can only imagine the sheer volume of work that comes with assuming the crown.
But King Charles appears to be performing some housekeeping as one of his functions. I read last week that he might have to lay off 100 people from the castle. I’m not sure why, but perhaps there were already too many and the Queen didn’t want to get rid of them considering how the last few years had gone.
However, it appears that King Charles has additional reforms in mind, some of which involve relieving members of the Royal Family of their obligations.
According to The Telegraph,
The King wants the law amended so that counsellors of state are working members of the Royal family, the Telegraph understands.
The move would see the Duke of York, the Duke of Sussex and Princess Beatrice all relieved of their duties as official stand-ins for the sovereign, should he be indisposed.
Under the 1937 Regency Act, the spouse of a monarch and the four adults next in line to the throne can be deployed as counsellors of state on official business.
When Queen Elizabeth was still on the throne, those roles were filled by the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, the Duke of Sussex and the Duke of York, while the Duke of Edinburgh had also acted as one before his death.
The change in the line of succession means that the new Queen Consort is now entitled to be a counsellor of state, as is Princess Beatrice as the next adult in line.
It’s pretty evident why King Charles would want to cut Harry and Andrew out of the equation. Both have been the subject of much controversy over the last few years.
Prince Harry has all but shunned the Royal Family on the account of his wife, Meghan Markle. Prince Andrew, while one of the Queen’s favorite children, has been at the center of sexual allegations related to Jeffrey Epstein.
Beatrice, however, hasn’t been caught up in any real major controversy, but maybe it has something to do with Prince Andrew.

Her Majesty was mother and grandmother, after all. There are things we expect, and accept, from Mumms and Oma. Maybe King Charles will , someday, be Pappa and Opa. For now, however, he has a royal family to organize, including some “swamp” to drain. Good luck to him. I am still disappointed that Charles Phillip Arthur George did not choose to be “King Arthur”.
