The Great American State Fair opened on the National Mall and drew big crowds, military flyovers, patriotic music, and a high-energy address from President Donald Trump as Washington prepared for the 250th anniversary celebrations. This piece walks through the highlights of the opening day, the president’s remarks, and the energy the event brought to the capital.
‘Hottest Country’: Trump in His Element As Great American State Fair Kicks Off in Washington, D.C.
The National Mall filled with color and noise as the Great American State Fair launched, celebrating the country’s upcoming 250th birthday. Families, veterans, and out-of-town visitors gathered to enjoy exhibits and performances that leaned into national pride and traditional American culture. The atmosphere was upbeat, with food vendors, displays for all 56 states and territories, and plenty of flags waving in the summer breeze.
Early highlights included carefully choreographed flyovers that drew cheers from the crowd and produced spectacular visuals across the skyline. Witnesses described the formations as precise and dramatic, a reminder of the military’s ceremonial role in national events. Those aerial maneuvers set the tone for an event framed as both celebratory and patriotic.

The fair also featured a massive flag display meant to honor all 50 states, presented in a way that emphasized unity under shared symbols. Attendees snapped photos and stood respectfully during the presentation, showing that traditional displays of national pride still resonate. That visual moment fit neatly with the larger theme of the weekend: remembrance, celebration, and projection of national strength.
Musical acts tilted toward faith-based and patriotic selections, reinforcing the event’s family-friendly, culturally conservative bent. The playlist and live performances emphasized hymns and classic American tunes, drawing singalongs and spontaneous applause. Organizers leaned into faith and tradition as staples in the program, which played well with a crowd energized by conservative values.
When President Trump took the stage, he framed the night as the beginning of the most memorable birthday bash in history and described America as the “hottest country.” His remarks mixed celebration with a political tone, highlighting accomplishments and future events planned for the summer. He promised big spectacles ahead while making the crowd feel part of a movement rather than just spectators at a show.
The program lists were ambitious: military flyovers, special performances, high-tech demonstrations, a FIFA Fan Zone, and even a rodeo to showcase a breadth of American culture. Organizers pushed to blend modern entertainment with traditional Americana, aiming to attract diverse age groups. The fair’s schedule promised continuous activity through July 10th, with peak moments set for Independence Day itself.
The president’s speech included plans for record-setting fireworks and future events like the Patriot Games and the Freedom 250 Grand Prix. He painted those events as national milestones that would put America’s celebratory spirit on full display. The tone was confident and forward-looking, aiming to tie the administration’s agenda to visible demonstrations of national pride.
Tonight, right here on our National Mall, we are beginning the most unforgettable birthday party any country has ever seen.
This evening, it is my honor to officially kick off the celebration with The Great American State Fair.
From today through July 10th, this event will showcase all 56 states and territories. There will be military flyovers, special performances, patriotic music, high tech demonstrations, unique exhibitions, a FIFA Fan Zone, and even an old-fashioned Rodeo.
Then, on July 4th, we will have the greatest show of all on the National Mall as we ring in our 250th year with the largest fireworks display in world history. We will set an official world record, with 100x more fireworks than the typical July 4th.
Then, in August, we will have the Patriot Games — a first-of-its-kind competition featuring the greatest high school athletes from across the United States.
And soon thereafter, we will have the Freedom 250 Grand Prix here in Washington D.C.
After the formal remarks, there were lighter, more human moments, including the president joining the crowd in dancing to “YMCA,” which brought laughter and applause. Those small scenes helped soften the political edges and offered photo-friendly, viral moments for supporters. The blend of spectacle and spontaneity kept the mood buoyant through the evening.
Organizers and attendees repeatedly emphasized that this kind of large-scale, patriotic celebration is a rare, once-in-a-generation project tied to the nation’s sesquicentennial momentum. The planning sought to make the Mall feel like a national town square, with something for everyone and plenty of moments designed for national pride. For many there, it was an affirmation that public, patriotic ceremonies still carry weight and meaning.
Our country is one of a kind – there will never be another one like it. The same can be said of our president. May God bless them both.
