The San Diego police and FBI held a joint briefing that highlighted two stark truths: a security guard’s intervention likely saved children at a mosque, and investigators found writings showing the attackers held mixed ideological hatreds. This article walks through the most important details revealed at the presser, including direct quotes from officials and the implications of what they disclosed.

Officials opened the briefing by describing how a lone security guard confronted two armed suspects who attacked a mosque. That confrontation forced the assailants to engage the guard instead of moving deeper into the facility, a response that officers say put dozens of children out of immediate danger. The guard’s rapid action and call for a lockdown were repeatedly credited with preventing a much larger casualty count.

The press conference included a detailed account of the timeline and how the security guard reacted under fire. Witnesses and investigators emphasized that the guard not only returned fire but also used his radio to initiate the lockdown, buying critical time for people inside. It’s rare to see such decisive individual action during an attack, and officials stressed how consequential that split-second bravery was.

San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl singled out the guard by name and described the encounter in stark terms. His remarks underline both the human cost and the tactical impact of what happened, painting a picture of a defender who stood between the attackers and a vulnerable crowd. Authorities say his actions delayed and disrupted the shooters’ plans, and that delay likely saved lives.

I talked yesterday about the heroic actions of the security guard at the Islamic center. I had no idea how heroic those actions were. The individuals that did this heinous act, ran past the security guard, most likely now knowing he was there. He immediately observed the threat to everybody at the mosque. He began to engage them with gunfire. Both suspects returned fire. You can see the security guard reach for his radio and put out the lockdown protocol. The security guard then continued to engage in a gun battle with these two suspects. His actions, without a doubt, delayed, distracted, and ultimately, deterred these two individuals from gaining access to the greater area of the mosque, where as many as 140 kids were within 15 feet of these suspects. Tragically, he died in that gun battle.

The Chief’s quote is blunt and specific about the stakes: up to 140 children were within 15 feet of the suspects before the guard intervened. That detail puts the scale of the potential tragedy into harsh relief and explains why agents and officers repeatedly called the guard’s actions heroic. Law enforcement repeatedly emphasized that the guard’s engagement changed the outcome of the attack.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Mark Remley added that materials recovered from the suspects’ vehicle suggest they held a mix of extremist ideas. His words implied the attackers were motivated by a blend of religious and racial animus rather than a single doctrine. Investigators described the writing as outlining the worldview those attackers wanted to impose, and they stressed the indiscriminate nature of the hatred reflected there.

In the vehicle that they (the shooters) used, we also identified writings, of various ideologies, outlining religious and racial beliefs, as to how the world they envisioned should look. These subjects did not discriminate on who they hated. And let me be very clear, to anyone that thinks that they can end the world through violence, they are sorely mistaken.

Special Agent Remley stopped short of offering specifics, which is normal while an investigation is active and evidence is still being processed. That restraint leaves open questions about motive, planning, and whether the suspects had any connections beyond the writings found. Investigators said more information will come as forensic work and interviews continue.

Media interest and community concern are both high, and local leaders have been vocal about honoring the guard’s sacrifice. The coverage has centered on the human story as much as the criminal probe: a private citizen put himself between danger and children, and died doing it. Officials and community members alike described the guard’s conduct as an example of courage under fire.

While the criminal investigation proceeds, the immediate focus for officials is documenting the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and confirming the timeline. Authorities have warned the public against drawing conclusions until more facts are released, but they have also been clear about the gravity of the recovered materials. The case is being handled as a top priority by both local and federal agencies.

The attack and the guard’s response have prompted urgent conversations about security at houses of worship and how communities can better protect vulnerable populations. That debate is already underway among local leaders and law enforcement, who are reviewing protocols and resources available to religious centers. For now, attention remains on the investigation and on supporting those affected by the violence.
