Russell Brand is reportedly facing a hostile reception from fellow inmates at HMP Wandsworth, where he has been held since his conviction last Thursday on one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault.
According to a report in the Daily Mail, hundreds of prisoners have been repeating an abusive chant aimed at Brand, who the paper says is “cowering in fear.” The chant reportedly goes: “There’s a Brand new nonce on the wing! A Brand new nonce. Brand, you c–t, you ain’t so f–king lairy now.” In British slang, “nonce” refers to a sexual offender, while “lairy” describes loud, boisterous behaviour.
HMP Wandsworth has long been flagged as one of London’s most troubled prisons. A report from the Howard League for Penal Reform found the facility held 1,457 inmates despite certified capacity for only 894 — 163% of its intended occupancy.
A 2024 report from Wandsworth’s Independent Monitoring Board described conditions inside as “inhumane.” It found that single-occupancy cells were routinely shared by two prisoners, some of whom went two or three weeks without a full change of clothing. Showers were described as damp and unhygienic, with poor ventilation allowing mould to form. Prisoners were often locked in their cells for up to 22 hours a day, at times without access to outdoor exercise due to staff shortages. Crumbling floors let in vermin, heating was inconsistent, and summer cell temperatures reportedly reached as high as 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
The same reporting period, 2023–24, recorded 442 inmate-on-inmate assaults and 518 assaults on staff, along with 998 incidents of self-harm involving 302 men. Ten deaths were recorded, six of them apparently self-inflicted.
Visits are tightly restricted, with a maximum of three visitors permitted per inmate at a time, all subject to a rub-down search and an enforced dress code. Inmates do have access to educational and vocational programmes, along with activities such as yoga, mindfulness, parenting classes, embroidery and choir, as well as monthly family days, phone calls, video calls and emails.
The Sun has previously reported that Brand was “petrified” on his first night at Wandsworth following a strip search described as “humiliating.” He was given a standard first-night pack of toiletries and food, and allowed a three-minute phone call with his wife, Laura, who has supported him throughout the trial.
Brand’s conviction followed a nearly two-year investigation prompted by several women coming forward with allegations. He pleaded not guilty and denied all charges throughout the trial. A UK legal expert told Page Six that Brand could face
