Jets head coach Aaron Glenn pushed back Monday on the idea that receiver Garrett Wilson’s sideline shouting during Sunday’s loss to Miami signaled real tension within the team.
CBS cameras caught Wilson yelling near the Jets bench during the 28-25 defeat. Broadcasters initially assumed he was shouting toward quarterback Geno Smith, who was seated nearby, but replay showed Wilson was instead directing his frustration at passing game coordinator Seth Ryan.
“I think sometimes that’s overblown as far as what people think is happening,” Glenn said. “Sometimes those conversations can be totally something else. I know for a fact that Geno, Garrett, it was more or less, ‘Let’s get going. Let’s get the offense going,’ more than guys bickering at each other. I think sometimes that gets overblown. I know what type of player Garrett is, and I know what type of player Geno is. I know where their heart’s at, too. I know for a fact that was more or less let’s get the offense going and try to score points.”
The outburst came during another lean afternoon for Wilson, who was targeted only three times against Miami and finished with two catches, with a third negated by penalty. It’s part of a broader pattern: Wilson managed just two targets through three quarters in last week’s game against the Patriots.
Glenn insisted the coaching staff is actively trying to get Wilson more involved.
“Garrett is our top priority to make sure we get the ball,” Glenn said. “But make no mistake about it, I think offensively we did some good things as far as when they were doubling Garrett, who was open? And I think that’s the essence of what you have to do is make sure that when you have an opportunity to throw to an open receiver, you take that opportunity instead of forcing the ball. But as much as possible, and I think you guys know this, we’re trying to get the ball to Garrett as much as we can.”
Elsewhere on the injury and roster front, cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. was a surprise healthy scratch Sunday, and Glenn declined to explain the decision.
“Yeah, I’m going to keep that in-house between me and Jarvis and we’ll go from there,” Glenn said, later repeating, “I just answered that. We’re going to keep that in-house.”
Glenn also offered no update on nose tackle T’Vondre Sweat, who left Sunday’s game in the second quarter with a knee injury.
