The NFL suspended two game officials this past week after separate on-field confrontations with players during games involving the Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings, marking a rare instance of the league disciplining its own officiating staff rather than players or coaches.
Line judge Jeff Seeman was suspended for two games after he was seen mouthing obscenities at Cardinals tight end Trey McBride during a late-game exchange. McBride had been frustrated after an apparent contact play on third down went unflagged.
Referee Adrian Hill received a one-game suspension after an incident in a game involving the Dolphins and Vikings. Hill was knocked to the ground after Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon blocked Vikings linebacker Eric Willson into him. Hill got up and confronted Willson face-to-face before ordering him back to the huddle.
The NFL said both suspensions were issued for “unprofessional conduct toward a player.”
NFL Players Association Executive Director JC Tretter addressed the incidents publicly, writing on social media that officials should be held to the same standard as players.
“This kind of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable. Players are consistently held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard.”
Former Super Bowl-winning head coach Bruce Arians, who led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a championship alongside Tom Brady in 2021, said he was struck by the league’s willingness to discipline officials under the current collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and its referees.
“I did see it and I am surprised a little bit because there was never accountability before. Under the new collective bargaining agreement with officials, there’s a lot more accountability and I’m glad to see that.”
Arians, known during his coaching career for his own sharp exchanges with officiating crews, said referees were accustomed to absorbing criticism from coaches on the sideline rather than players.
“I’ve had many, many run-ins with the referees. I’m legendary in that part, you know. They’d come over [and say], ‘Please, just don’t spit on me, coach.’ I’d be hollering and screaming at them. But, yeah, it’s a great thing I think.”
He added that he was more surprised the confrontations involved players rather than coaches, who he said “can go way overboard” in their own dealings with officials.
“I was surprised it was more with a player than a coach, because coaches can go way overboard. But I think that’s a very, very important thing that the NFL now has control.”
By suspending both officials publicly rather than addressing the conduct internally, the league signaled that referees, like players, will face consequences for crossing lines on the field under the current labor agreement.
