The Atlanta Falcons improved to 2-2 on the season with a 45-24 win over the New Orleans Saints at the Superdome on Monday night, extending a run of dominant performances since quarterback Michael Penix Jr. returned to the starting lineup.
Atlanta is now 2-0 in games started by Penix this season. In the win over New Orleans, he completed 15 of 20 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown, posting a career-best passer rating of 127.7. The previous week, in a 34-10 win over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, Penix went 18 of 25 for 256 yards. Those two road wins by 20 points or more mark the first time Atlanta has managed that feat twice in 11 days; the franchise hadn’t recorded a single road win by that margin in the previous six seasons.
Running back Bijan Robinson remains the centerpiece of the offense, but the Falcons struggled to turn his production into wins during two earlier losses with backup quarterback Cooper Rush under center. With Penix healthy, new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees — who joined Atlanta alongside head coach Kevin Stefanski and was given control of play-calling — has leaned on a rotation of Robinson and backup Brian Robinson Jr., who scored three touchdowns of his own on Monday night.
New Orleans allowed 45 points, its highest total in a single game in 10 years, despite fielding a top-10 scoring and yardage offense this season. The Saints fell to 1-3, undone by slow starts in nearly every game. They trailed 21-0 to Detroit in a one-point loss, trailed Baltimore 14-3 in their only win, trailed Las Vegas 13-6 in another close defeat, and fell behind 24-7 at halftime against Atlanta.
New Orleans also played without running back Travis Etienne, who sat out with a hamstring injury and is expected to miss at least three more games. Atlanta outrushed the Saints 138-15 in the first half alone.
New Orleans’ defense, which allowed 17.5 points per game over the final eight games of last season during a late-season turnaround, has given up an average of 27 points per game through its first three outings this year and surrendered even more against Atlanta. The unit ranks in the bottom 10 of the league against the run and on third down.
Atlanta’s own defense faces a separate problem heading into a stretch of home games against the Ravens, Bears and 49ers — teams with a combined 10-2 record this season. After finishing second in the NFL with 57 sacks last year, the Falcons have recorded just seven sacks through four games, on pace for roughly half of last season’s total. The team lost edge rusher Jalon Walker to a season-ending injury and will be without James Pearce Jr. for an eight-game suspension. Za’Darius Smith, who came out of retirement to join the pass rush, has contributed 2.5 sacks but missed much of Monday’s game with a concussion, leaving his status uncertain.
The lack of pressure has coincided with a league-low two takeaways for Atlanta’s defense through four games. The Falcons sit even with the 2-2 Carolina Panthers in the NFC South race, a division in which no team has yet separated from the pack.
