Washington, California, Connecticut, New Jersey and Michigan will all raise their minimum wages on Jan. 1, 2027, with Seattle's city wage floor set to reach $22.14 an hour amid a weakening local job market.

Workers in several states will see another round of minimum wage increases on Jan. 1, 2027, pushing pay floors in some Democratic-led states to more than double the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour. Nowhere will the gap be wider than in Seattle, where the city’s own minimum wage is set to climb to $22.14 an hour — nearly $4.50 above the new statewide rate.

Washington state will lead the pack of states raising their minimums, moving from $17.13 to $17.73 an hour. Connecticut’s rate will rise from $16.94 to $17.48, and California’s from $16.90 to $17.40. New Jersey will add 56 cents to reach $16.48 for most workers, while Michigan is set for one of the larger jumps, climbing from $13.73 to $15 an hour.

Republican-led states have also moved their wage floors well above the federal rate, though still below the top-tier blue states. Florida reached $15 an hour on Sept. 30 and will hold there through the end of 2027. Missouri is also at $15. Nebraska will rise from $15 to $15.26 on Jan. 1.

Washington’s increases happen automatically. Under state law, the minimum wage is tied to inflation and recalculated every year without requiring new legislative action. The policy traces back to a 1998 ballot measure that raised the minimum wage and began tying future increases to inflation starting in 2001. Voters approved a separate measure in 2016 that set scheduled increases through 2020; since 2021, the wage has again risen annually with inflation. Each September, the state Department of Labor & Industries calculates the following year’s rate using the CPI-W, announces it Sept. 30, and the new rate takes effect Jan. 1.

Seattle’s Own Higher Bar

Seattle layers its own wage requirements on top of the state’s. Beginning in 2025, all employers in the city — including small businesses — became subject to the same inflation-adjusted minimum wage previously reserved for larger companies. Some restaurant owners who have since closed their doors cited rising labor costs as one of several financial pressures they faced.

Seattle Red host and conservative commentator Jason Rantz argued the policy environment is becoming harder for businesses to navigate.

“Democrats appear to be doing everything they can to make the business climate in Washington more untenable,” Rantz told Fox News Digital. “It’s not just the high cost of labor — Seattle is now going to be over $22 an hour — but it’s the high crime, open-air drug use, new income tax that targets pass-through businesses, and over regulation that make operating businesses more difficult than it should be.”

“Our unemployment rate is higher than the national average and we’re losing tech jobs left and right,” he added. “Democrats have no answers. They’re just making their problems worse.”

The wage increase arrives alongside a cooling labor market in the state. Washington’s unemployment rate reached 4.9% in August, above the 4.1% national rate and up from 4.6% a year earlier, according to the state Employment Security Department. The state lost an estimated 900 jobs that month, including 2,300 information-sector positions, while professional and business services employment fell 13,100 jobs from a year earlier.

Angela Rosen, who founded Penelope and the Beauty Bar and runs three Seattle spas, said her therapists already earn above minimum wage, but rising labor costs have forced cuts elsewhere in her business. “I had to cut my front desk,” Rosen told The Jason Rantz Show, according to Seattle Red, a move that eliminated 12 shifts per week across two of her smaller locations.
