A magnesium supplement selling for $19 on Amazon ahead of the retailer’s October Prime Day event is drawing attention from shoppers who say it has helped them sleep without relying on prescription medication.
The product, NOW Supplements Magnesium Glycinate, contains magnesium glycinate, a form of the essential mineral involved in the body’s production of melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate sleep-wake cycles. Amazon’s October Prime Day, officially called Prime Big Deal Days, runs Oct. 6 through Oct. 7, though some discounts are already active.
A European clinical trial examining magnesium supplementation’s effect on sleep quality, mood and activity levels concluded the mineral “may be an effective nonpharmacological intervention to promote sleep and mood.”
One reviewer of the NOW formula said she stopped taking Ambien, a prescription sleep medication, after using the supplement.
“I never went back to Ambien, even though I had been using it for several years, and I never thought I’d be able to get a full night’s sleep without it,” the user wrote. “For me, this has been the best sleep support I’ve found that actually works, and I’ve tried so many things. I take two each night, and it really helps me relax, calm nighttime anxiety and wind me down so I can fall asleep more easily.”
Other users reported benefits beyond sleep. Older research suggests magnesium supplementation may help prevent muscle cramps in people who are deficient in the mineral or have low magnesium levels.
“This magnesium glycinate has helped my nighttime leg cramps so much,” another reviewer wrote. “After taking it consistently, I noticed a huge difference in how often I was waking up with painful cramps, and now I’m finally sleeping much more comfortably through the night.”
The manufacturer says the product is third-party tested for purity and potency and is GMP Quality Assured. As with any supplement, consumers are advised to consult a physician before adding it to their routine, since the claims here rest on individual user reports and limited clinical research rather than FDA-reviewed proof of effectiveness.
Amazon’s October Prime Day sale is exclusive to Prime members, though the company offers a 30-day free trial for shoppers who want access to the discounts.
