Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives in Washington Wednesday evening for a two-day summit with President Donald Trump that officials say will center on artificial intelligence, trade, rare-earth minerals and Beijing’s role in supplying fentanyl precursor chemicals.
Xi, accompanied by his wife Peng Liyuan, is set to land at Joint Base Andrews for a red-carpet arrival ceremony. It marks his first visit to the nation’s capital in more than a decade, at a moment when relations between the two governments are strained over technology competition, intellectual property theft, trade practices and China’s support for Iran during the recent U.S. military conflict there.
The formal summit runs from Thursday morning through Friday evening, according to a senior administration official. Thursday opens with a State Arrival Ceremony on the White House South Lawn, State Floor and Rose Garden involving 479 military personnel from every branch.
Trade, Rare Earths and Fentanyl on the Table
The senior official said a broad deal on tariff reductions for non-strategic goods is expected to come up, along with talks on rare-earth exports and possible export controls. Trump is also expected to press Xi to do more to stop the flow of fentanyl precursor chemicals out of China.
