A new Whole Foods Market opened its doors Wednesday, September 16, at 8100 Elk Grove Blvd. in Elk Grove, California, giving shoppers in Sacramento County a fourth Whole Foods location in the region and the chain’s 94th store statewide.
The Amazon-owned grocer’s press release describes the store as a 43,000-square-foot operation stocked with more than 1,500 items from California-based suppliers. The product lineup was assembled with help from Patrick Wyman, the company’s Forager for Local & Emerging Brands.
The cheese counter, staffed by trained cheesemongers who offer recommendations, carries products from California producers including Nicasio Valley Cheese, Adante Dairy and Charles Chocolates.
Produce comes from more than 200 California-based suppliers, among them Durst Organic Growers, Full Belly Farm and Coke Farm.
The seafood counter offers what the company calls expert fishmonger service along with ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat meal options. Whole Foods says all seafood sold there is either sustainable wild-caught or Responsibly Farmed. A full-service meat counter sells made-in-house fresh sausage and marinated, seasoned meats, also sourced in part from local suppliers.
Shoppers can additionally pick from a bakery section and a prepared foods area with pizza by the slice, hot food bars and salad bars.
Grand Opening Draws Crowds
At Wednesday’s grand opening, the first 300 customers through the door received a limited-edition Elk Grove tote bag and a coupon worth up to $100 in savings, according to a report from the Sun. Photos circulating on social media showed lines of shoppers waiting outside ahead of the opening.
Whole Foods was founded in Austin, Texas, in 1980 and has since grown to more than 500 stores across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
